More Mokuba + Serenity being besties! Haha I now love these two
Serenity visits Mokuba’s place for the first time because they agreed to study for a test and forgot it was a public holiday so the library and most public places they could go are closed.
She loves cute things so she absolutely delights in the sheer amount of obvious and subtle blue eyes merch the Kaiba mansion has. She’s basically cuddling with a blue eyes shaped throw pillow the entire time they’re studying and Mokuba cannot help but be reminded of Seto (he tells neither of them this because they’d be offended for different reasons).
Speaking of Seto he’s watching them the whole time- studying, when they go to Mokuba’s room to look at his duel monsters drawings, the dining room to eat cake- because he’s Mokuba’s big brother but in his house he’s also Big Brother. He has security cameras everywhere and it’s not that he thinks Serenity will do anything but you can never be too sure with strangers.
Serenity for sure became pretty popular at school because she’s pretty and nice to everyone and I feel like she’d be really good at art and literature. Mokuba and Serenity are in the garden eating cake and she’s sharing all the gossip said popularity affords her knowledge of when Seto happens upon them.
He plays it off as wanting a walk in his own damn house but Mokuba knows better and that any move Seto makes is purposeful and thought out but Serenity’s already introducing herself and thanking him for having her over and telling him about the exam they’re studying for (it’s physics so Mokuba’s basically her personal tutor but she makes up for it by reading all of his essays and sending them back with red editing marks all over).
Plus Serenity grew up having to defuse her mom from talking about her dad and Joey so she knows how to make people comfortable and focus on what she wants them to think about. And before long she and Seto have had a short but pleasant conversation.
Seto tells Mokuba to make sure their driver gives her a ride home which is how Mokuba knows she’s won him over, because he was going to do that anyways so she wouldn’t have to take a cab alone or walk in the dark but the fact that Seto’s saying it means he slightly gives a shit.
Serenity also eventually gets Seto’s phone number because “she’s not bad, for a Wheeler” and both Seto and Mokuba admit that despite their surveillance on the school it’d be good to have contact with her because too many people have shown that they’re willing to kidnap Mokuba to get to Seto.
Serenity is possibly the only person in the world who considers Seto Kaiba, both in her head and in her phone contacts, to be “Seto - Mokuba’s brother”. And although Mokuba is the first to sing his brother’s praises he can admit it feels good that someone knows his brother because of him for once.

Reupdating my Yu-Gi-Oh Headcanons list
All my headcanons are from the Duel Monsters portion of the series, most of which are influenced by the anime and personal thoughts and ideas.
Atem has a thing for anything strawberry. Strawberry drinks, baked goods, artisan goods, you name it. If it's got strawberry, Atem will almost certainly eat it. Even as Yami, he would take over Yugi's body sometimes to enjoy strawberry flavors(Yugi thought it was silly but also was happy Yami had something he liked)
Of course, my headcanon of Kaiba treating Yugi like a second little brother after Atem departs. Seriously, Yugi becoming an unofficial Kaiba brother because of Seto's love for Atem and feeling bad that Yugi doesn't have his own big brother now is something that feeds me life.
Atem's last name is Sennen. His full name is Atem Yami Sennen
Kaiba's full name is Seto Ryuuki Kaiba. Sometimes Atem calls Seto by his middle name, and Seto loves how whispery and velvety Atem says it.
Kaiba and Mokuba's birth surname is Konami. Their parents names were Sara and Akira(called Aki for short)
Kaiba and Atem are 100% gay and demi, Yugi is bisexual and nonbinary(goes by he/they pronouns)
Kaiba and Atem are both intersex, Kaiba's intersex biology allows for childbearing, but it's not something he likes to think about or really wants, as pregnancy means a loss of control over his own body, and Kaiba can't imagine not having control.
Atem eventually returns through magic nonsense and everyone is overjoyed to have him back (Yugi and Kaiba especially, for their own reasons)
Kaiba has a cat. Her name is Zahra and he adopts her from a shelter not long after the Ceremonial Duel, telling Mokuba things are feeling a bit lonely and maybe a pet would help make their home a little less empty. Despite his cold exterior, Kaiba loves animals and would adopt every single one from every shelter in the world if he could.
Atem loves cats and hits it off with Zahra(Kaiba doesn't like that he's no longer her favorite person but Atem spoils her as much as he does so he supposes its fine), and for some reason, strays gravitate towards him and he occasionally comes home with a new cat in his arms, announcing. "Ryuuki, another one chose me!", and Kaiba just goes with it, loving how the mansion staff are now always kept on their toes by the MANY cats now running amok.
Kaiba's favorite of Atem's little cat herd(also called a clutter) is Luna, a pretty tortoiseshell with golden eyes and dainty white paws. She gets attached to him rather than Atem(much to Kaiba's delight)
Later down the line, Kaiba finds an abandoned corgi puppy. Unable to ignore the creature, he takes her home to Atem and their many cats. They name her Duchess as she quickly becomes a spoiled pup.
Yugi and Marik are a couple. I just think they're cute together. They'd eventually have a son(Kaiba helps them create their son by taking Yugi and Marik's DNA and making the baby in a tube in his lab. Because I'm absolutely certain Kaiba could do that sort of thing if he tried) and name him Atemu, after Atem. Because Yugi just loves his brother so much. (cue Uncle Atem shedding tears of joy), and when Atemu is 2, they have twins; a son and daughter named Toki and Tera.
Atem and Kaiba get married and Atem 100% is in charge of wedding planning cause he has better tastes than Kaiba when it comes to this sort of thing. And Atem convinces Seto to let him wear a dress for the wedding. Kaiba becomes Seto Kaiba-Sennen.
Kaiba and Atem eventually have twins unplanned, a daughter named Kaida and a son named Yami, both taking Atem's last name of Sennen. The pregnancy is full of complications for Kaiba due to his unique situation, and the changes to his body cause a lot of dysphoria, but Atem is always there for him when things get rough, knowing that Seto can get through this with the strength and grace he applies daily.
Joey becomes a KC Security Officer because he's "A good guard dog", according to Kaiba.
Tea becomes a successful dancer on Broadway, landing many lead roles. Yugi and friends are glad to see her follow her dreams, and occasionally, Kaiba will sponsor musicals and plays that Tea is in, his way of showing his friendship.
Tristan opens a martial arts and self defense studio, wanting to teach others how to protect themselves and the ones they care about.
Bakura begins to work for the museum, and always manages to rope Atem into helping during his free time, as Atem WAS an ancient Pharaoh.
Atem works graphic design for Kaiba Corp (he's a surprisingly good artist)
Yugi works at Kaiba Corp for the game development division. Sometimes he brings Atemu and Toki into the office with him, and he tries to coordinate dates where Kaida and Yami are brought in when Seto and Atem come to work so their kids can bond with each other. (Yugi wants his sons to have a deep connection with their cousins asap.)
Atemu looks a lot like his namesake uncle, thanks to the combo of Yugi's hair and Marik's complexion, but his eyes are Marik's lavender. Toki and Tera are pale like Yugi with soft, sandy-colored hair like Marik, and Yugi's amethyst eyes.
Kaida looks a lot like her father Atem, bearing his tri-tone hair, although the ends of hers are blue instead of red, she bears his darker complexion, and the shape of her eyes is quite similar to his. She gets Seto's blue eyes. Yami, however, is a mini Seto Kaiba with Atem's purple eyes. (the little guy has already mastered the 'Kaiba scowl')
Later down the line, Atem and Kaiba have two more kids. Ryuuki and Sara. Both kids have Atem's dark complexion. Sara's hair is black and wavy and she has Kaiba's blue eyes. Ryuuki, however, much like his brother Yami, has Kaiba's brown hair and Atem's amethyst eyes.
Mokuba absolutely adores his nieces and nephews, being sure to talk about them to anyone who will listen(or is forced to). He also spoils them whenever he can, wanting to give Kaida, Sara, Ryuuki and Yami the whole world, wanting them to have a childhood full of certainty and light, unlike what he and Seto had. Uncle Mokuba ftw.
Kaiba rebrands Kaiba Corporation to Sennen Corporation.
Joey eventually finds a nice girl and hooks up with her, and Atem, being a former Pharaoh, officiates Joey's wedding.
Joey soon becomes a dad, having four kids. Jack, Jana, Kaden, and Jacob. The little ones are a handful, having Joey's spirit and knack for trouble. And Kaiba says "Wheeler, the world had enough of you, why'd you add four more?" the first time he meets the kids. However is is quite fond of them, as his children have friends to grow up with.

What is everyone's art (in as broad or narrow a definition as you feel like) abilities like?
Some Technical Terms:
Phantasia: the ability to imagine something visually in your head. Try to picture an apple. Some people with really good Phantasia can imagine a hypothetical apple right down to the breed and degree of ripeness, while other people with Aphantasia struggle to create an image at all, or can only get as far as "Round" or "Red". Aphantasia isn't necessarily a major hinderence to being an artist, but having a good sense of Phantasia is a major help.
Yugi: Pretty good! He's a chronic doodler and is good at 3D crafts like miniatures, faking a dueling glove, mobiles etc. He doesn't really have formal art education (budget cuts to the school art program) but he has an excellent sense of Phantasia and is very good at drawing from life. He has decent auditory discrimination and could tell you the individual components of a song, but can't play an instrument, and is uncoordinated to the point of struggling to clap to a beat.
Yami: You know how there are things you learn to draw by pattern, like that one S and that cartoon dog face with the U-shaped eyes? That's about as good as he gets. He has a good sense of Phantasia and can imagine something visually even if it's only verbally described, but he never got the hang of getting the image out of his brain and into real life through his hands. He could play a guitar if you handed him one and gave him a couple hours to mess with it and work out how it's different than the stringed instrument he does remember though. Can dance, but only ones with set steps, like a waltz or tango.
Joey: Joey assembles and paints miniatures like tabletop minis and model airplanes for fun. Ridiculously steady hands and an almost distressing attention to detail. Because he's used to assembling them, he also has great spatial reasoning along with his rendering skills. Tied with Tristan for Guy Who Draws The Best Maps. Absolutely Wretched Audio discrimination. Could not identify which part of the song was made by what instrument. When dancing, give him his own 5-foot square, like a D&D character, or risk taking an elbow to the face.
Tristan: Got ALL his fucking badges in scouts and did a special presentation on cartography. Struggles to draw things that are not directly obsevable though. Plays Jazz Clarinet. Shut Up About That Though. Decently good dancer if pressed. Please don't press him.
Tea: Tea has Aphantasia to the dregree that she struggles to draw something even when looking at the drawing. Could not draw a map, navigates by landmark, cannot tell you what that landmark is. Never actually learned how to play an instrument but she could pick it up if she had the interest. but Dancing. Holy Shit. Tea may not know what she looks like without a mirror but she is PRECISELY aware of where every single part of her is and what it's doing. Flawless integration between her audio reasoning and kinesthetic skills. Why Waltz when she can improvise?
Seto: In a happier world where Seto's parents lived and he got to grow up like a normal boy, he would have been a sociology major that could draw dogs that look like horses and maybe triangles. As it stands, Seto grew up learning how to be a captialist and loving social interactions that had ACTUAL RULES to them and he... Poor motherfucker starts to draw what's supposed to be a Triangle but the third line doesn't QUITE meet up with the first and now it's a really fucked up rectangle. He doesn't know WHY this happens (it's because his phantasia works EXCLUSIVELY in 3D) and it doesn't bother him until the day he watches Joey freehand a perfect circle without thinking about it. He knows how to sort-of play the Violin, because it was expected of him to learn some kind of Art Thing, and he liked the opportunity to make obnoxious noises in Gozaboro's vicinty with the veneer of plausible deniability. Which is to say, Seto knows how to get exactly the noises he wants out of a violin, but not how to play like. Music. The man Does. Not. Dance. No. Stop It. If he has to think about his body existing in space he may explode.
Bakura: Bakura can draw a map! Bakura LOVES drawing maps! The problem is, he won't actually draw you a 'map'. He will hand you a piece of paper that contains not only an excessively detailed rendering of the entire downtown area of Domino City, it will also have the locations of the best places to get soup, sites of famous homicides, a seven-paragraph essay on the history of the building that used to be the sugar mill but now it's a post office and a portrait of his favorite Bodega Cat. You are not trying to get soup, see homicide sites or go to the post office. You might go pet that cat though. Problem is that Bakura's brain has been ravaged by the family genetic disorder, being posessed, literal arcane background radiation, and a TON of unprocessed trauma. Long-term memory? patchy at best. Short-term memory? entirely nonfunctional. So now he has to do EVERYTHING through sensory processing. Like having a laptop with a fucked hard drive and no RAM so it reverse-engineered itself to do all it's thinking with it's graphics card. This means that he can recall a truly stunning amount of information about any topic, but it takes him half a minute to remember what you're actually talking about while that loads, and a lot of that information is not really helpful. Similarly, Bakura has an amazing memory for sounds and thier meanings, but not anything like a sense of rhythm. Kinesthetic reasoning has been disregarded entirely. He doesn't know what building he's in, let alone where his feet are. Still attatched, hopefully.

Seto Kaiba/Azureshipping -  unexpected parent/parenting headcanon
beyond-far-horizons
i have a headcanon that rather than the obvious 'demand an abortion cos he can't deal with being a father/emotions' Seto would suddenly find he couldn't cope with the idea of losing the child and would want to keep it and in fact would be wide-eyed and bowled over by the experience of being a dad and spoil the child rotten in compensation for all the crap he was put through.
anzu-kaiba
@beyond-far-horizons Uh I'll accept that headcanon thank you very much
I was toying with an unexpected pregnancy scenario a while ago and realised as things developed in my head that Kaiba would very possibly act the complete opposite from the cliched uncaring jerk one would expect in this situation.
Far from this being OOC Seto has demonstrated a strong sense of loyalty and responsibility when it comes to the few things he cares about( see Kaiba, Mokuba, KaibaCorp and Kaiba Land respectively). Also a core part of his background is losing his parents esp mother young and being thrown out like trash by the rest of his relatives, culminating in living in an awful orphanage and forcing a monster to adopt him and his brother to insure Mokuba’s future. Kaiba Land is specifically designed as a playful respite for children esp orphans who can get in for free. So...
(Disclaimer - I fully support a woman’s choice with regards to her body/pregnancy, I’m just writing this from what I perceive to be Seto’s perspective.)
After an initial struggle feeling not up to parenthood, Seto can’t bear the thought of an abortion because it reminds him of being thrown away like trash by the rest of his family after his parents’ death.
He would reluctantly respect Téa’s right to her body but would heavily persuade her to keep the child, promising to support her in every aspect including her missed career.
Shocks Téa with how passionate he is on the subject  - she didn’t know much of the history. This is part of what persuades her to keep it.
Also shocks her when he dryly reveals that yes actually ‘the great Seto Kaiba’ would be good at taking care of a baby because he helped raise one when he was just a kid, including helping his increasingly sick mother with nappy-changing because his dad was out working several jobs to support the family. Besides they’d have nannies. (Later he decides the nannies aren’t good enough and he does most of it himself.)
Téa sometimes catches him with an inexplicably tender and vulnerable expression on his face when he looks at her/her growing bump, esp at night when they are in bed.
Tumblr media
Grows increasingly protective and paranoid about Téa as the pregnancy continues due to a) his latent trauma at what happened to his mother (HC - she eventually died from medical malpractice/long-term complications from Mokuba’s birth) b) unconsciously sees Téa and the baby as ‘his’ now and we all know he guards things that are ‘his’ like a dragon and its hoard.
Obsessively researches pregnancy and child development and ‘KaibaSplains’ pregnancy and its complications to every women in the room including Téa’s mother and the group of highly experienced midwives he’s hired to take care of Téa.
This leads to big fights between him and Téa who alternately finds his protectiveness endearing or downright stifling. He has to learn to back off. She may, after threatening to leave at one point after a huge fight, get him to reluctantly agree to therapy.
Designs whole suite next to their bedroom for the nursery which of course is blue and features ALOT of toy dragons.
Gives Téa lots of massages for the back pain. He is VERY good at massage. Is increasingly reluctant to have full sex because of the baby though. Very frustrating for a hormonal Téa who’s finding possessive yet vulnerable Seto extremely attractive.
Determines that as the baby grows they will have everything he and Mokuba didn’t get to have. It takes all of Téa’s sweetness and feistiness to stand up to his excesses and make sure the child doesn’t become a complete spoiled brat.
Insists on being in the birthing room against the midwives’ advice, stating firmly that he will not faint. He has more trouble than Téa during the whole process and yes towards the end he does faint. She never lets him live it down.
Will always be the one to get up in night to see if the baby is okay and will often get up anyway just to look at them and marvel quietly that he helped create something so perfect.
Designs increasingly incredible baby toys. Baby decides it loves the simple things though esp a toy Kuriboh from Yugi that reminds Seto of his Duelist Kingdom duel every . single . time.
Baby will have the most perfect blue eyes of course. I hc it is a girl and because GX’s Alexis looks a bit like Kaiba and is known as the Queen of Obelisk Blue, I’d call her Alexis.
Mokuba is the best cool uncle - ‘Uncle Mokie’. Joey also wants to be a cool uncle and how much he is allowed to be is directly linked to how much Seto has pissed Téa off and needs to make amends.
Pegasus trolls Seto by offering to handpaint a series of exclusive powerful cards just for the baby and the baby shower. Kaiba struggles because he wants the cards but doesn’t want Pegasus anywhere near his kid. He counters by creating a line of ‘teach your toddler Duel Monsters’ which becomes the nursery/kindergarden version of Duel Academy.
Seto is hands down the father in law from hell. No-one is going to so much as look at his precious girl the wrong way. He will not only vet dates in more detail than the military, he will design Greek legend level of tests for them to prove they are worthy. Then he will still decide they are not. Girl’s going to have major fights with him on that score and will likely date inappropriate partners in rebellion. Bonus points if its the kid of Joey and Mai or a child of Yugi’s.

☯ and 🌏 for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Ask Meme, please!
☯ for a character you most relate with: THIS YOYOS AROUND A LOT because while I relate to Kaiba’s inability to open up to people and like “how come i’m not perfect yet” mentality, I actually think I’m probably more of a Yuugi… in the sense that it feels very hard for me to make friends, and I can struggle a lot with my self-esteem… and I’m more good-natured, as a rule, than not. And I definitely relate to like, early manga Yuugi being very into his own thing and being the class oddball…
🌏 for any AU ideas you’ve had that you’d like to try or just some that you find interesting: THIS IS MY FAAAAAAAAVORITEEEE QUESTIONNNNN my favorite kind of AU specifically is “what if this one very specific thing changed, and what effect does that have on everything else?” here are some of the AU ideas i’ve batted around
- Kaiba bros are adopted by a single mom, a math professor. i have notes on this one here and here but it’s all fluff, basically. just for funsies
- the kaiba bros can’t shake the military industrial complex and instead deliberately tank kaiba corp. also just for funsies.
- Kaiba bros’ parents never died at all. this is more in the context of a fic i’ve been outlining where canon!verse kaiba is fucking around with his dimension cannon and accidentally switches place with the seto from a different dimension - specifically, THAT dimension. Alt!mom realizes pretty much immediately that kaiba is not her real son. kaiba wants to go back to his own dimension, but can’t find his fucking rocket. meanwhile, the canon!squad has a very cheerful and laidback seto on their hands, and joey swears up and down that the REAL seto ALWAYS let him borrow his BEWD cards. REALLY?!? alt!seto is friendly, but not stupid. definitely not.
- i work at a tech start-up and i like to think about pegasus and kaiba being the weird and eccentric co-founders of a gaming start-up. start-up shenanigans ensue
anyway. that’s a sampling. i love talking AUs, especially “for want of a nail” AUs, because SO MUCH YUGIOH PLOT depends SPECIFICALLY on kaiba being in control of kaiba corp, and there are so many ways that he might NOT be…. drama

In Defense Of Seto Kaiba..... From Someone Who Used To Hate Seto Kaiba
@youfancymemaddearie said she'd hear me out on why Kaiba isn't The Actual Worst, so for this I'm mostly only going to be using the material I'm personally familiar with because things like context and translations and stuff could get warped otherwise, wich means roughly the first half of the dubbed anime, but I might pull other things here and there that I feel like I know well enough to have a grasp on via things like wikipedia and other meta (it's a long story as to why I never finished the anime so I won't bother getting into it here)
The manga, being a separate canon, is going to be pretty much ignored for this, except for one breif instance where I feel it's necessary to compare something from it to how the anime did it
So, the thing is, for most of my life as a YGO fan (15+ years as of 2018), I bordered between a really weird love and hate of Seto Kaiba, I loved him the way that I love a good villain, the way I love Hannibal Lecter let's say, he's entertaining and I always liked having him on the screen but as a person I really hated him, because.. why wouldn't I? He's an absolute dick to everyone around him with the exception of Mokuba, and even Mokuba doesn't exactly get the cuddly treatment most of the time, he spends the beginning of the series toeing the line between outright villain and anti-hero, and the amount of low-blows he hits and lack of care he has for people who are trying to help him- or people in general- is pretty terrible, atleast... that's how he's presented on the surface and that's how I felt for close to fifteen years
And then I started writing him and the little bastard forced me to change my opinion
Firstly, it's established from the beginning that Seto's actions in stealing Grandpa Muto's card and tearing it up (not to mention giving him a heartattack) aren't entirely his own, Seto had an evil possessing him at the time that, wile manifested from his own feelings, was no less a different entity, it took him over, just like Marik's dark self took him over, it's well-established in YGO that you can be so overcome with pain and anger and negativity that an entirely different spirit manifests and takes over your mind, a process that- wile reversible if caught early enough- is really something that can only be reversed by magic, like a shadow game or a mind crush
Since this is the thing that Atem removed from Seto's mind in episode one....
Tumblr media
The actions he took prior to being mind-wiped can't be held entirely against him, as he was not consciously in control of what he was doing at the time, much like the actions of Yami Marik can't be held entirely against Hikari Marik, you can sure as hell blame Marik himself for alot of the things he did during Battle City, but things like the duels against Mai, Joey, and Atem, wherein it was blatantly clear that it was his evil half in control and his good half didn't have access to the controls (made even more obvious by the Yami Duel wherein both spirits had to sacrifice parts of their lighter selves/hosts for losing life points) are impossible to hold entirely against him
We also see that everything is Not Ok after the mind-crush, given that Seto passes up the chance to do his all-time favorite things (dueling, winning, and showing off) on the grandest scale yet when he decides to skip Duelist Kingdom, he claims it's because he doesn't know how to handle being defeated, and wile that may be partly true, it's pretty canonical that it was because of the mind crush (why else would they bring that hideous glob of evil around to duel Yugi/Atem once more?)
And, here's where the manga reference comes in, when you take into account that in the manga, he was in a six-month long coma after the mind-crush- and, mind you (ha), Duelist Kingdom is the turning point where the manga's canon starts to get closer to the anime's- it's really hard to believe that Seto's existential crisis is based on losing and not based on having evil forcefully removed from his soul by an ancient Egyptian spirit who's out to have a good time and was really feeling attacked at the moment
There's really no convenient place to inject backstory, so I'll do it here in the hopes of flowing more easily into the rest of Duelist Kingdom
Seto has been taking care of Mokuba since they were extremely young, he's essentially more like a father to him than a brother, and he had to learn early on to defend him - and that meant getting rougher, getting tougher, getting meaner, and when it came to Gozaburo- who's just about as abusive as one can get and really puts the word "pressure" to good use- that meanness has to amplify, it's made clear that Gozaburo wouldn't tolerate anything less than perfection and ruthlessness and if that was how Seto had to survive, that was how he had to survive, he spent most of his formative years under that kind of hand so naturally he was forced to form that way....
But as someone pointed out in another post somewhere, we can see by how well adapted Mokuba is just how much Seto has taken on in protecting him from that kind of corruption and evil, Gozaburo never really wanted Mokuba around so the pressure he put on him compared to Seto was definitely minimal... but that doesn't mean he wasn't just as abusive, and the fact that Mokuba spent the majority of his life with no parents of any kind and has relied pretty much solely on Seto as a parental figure- both in the way of necessities like food and shelter, as well as for emotional health- and yet has come out of it as a generally upbeat, positive, gentle person, really shows that Seto has to be doing something right, otherwise, it doesn't make alot of sense for Mokuba to have no shreds of bitterness, resentment, or negativity in him (again, going by the anime only) And further, to show the outstandingly deep devotion he does for Seto- utterly unwavering and full of not only loyalty, but genuine love and affection- proves that Seto has done something right somewhere, Mokuba never shows a single ounce of fear or hesitation towards him and never gives a second thought to hugging him, following him around, or getting involved in his personal affairs, if Seto had ever given him reason to be afraid of him (IE: abusing him or simply not stepping up to protect him when Gozaburo was abusing him) I find it really hard to believe that Mokuba would act so completely care-free with doing things that Seto may find unpleasant
Mokuba is Seto's entire world, he flat out tells Yugi that Mokuba is "everything to him", not money or power or success- Mokuba, wich is already something that speaks volumes about who he is as a person, and the extremes he goes to in order to protect Mokuba are .... pretty fucking extreme
When I was a kid, I thought that the "attack my Blue Eyes and you might just kill me" stunt he pulls on the rooftop at Pegasus' castle was a really filthy trick and was probably my primary reason for hating him as much as I did- and let's be honest, it IS a filthy option to resort to.... but as an adult, I understand it now, and can't place blame on him for feeling so completely backed into a corner, he wasn't trying to trick Atem, he was being sincere, I mean.... filthy and sincere... but still sincere
He would rather die than lose his brother, he was so desperate that he was ready to let someone kill him/commit suicide because he was out of options, and in that perspective, it's alot easier to understand why he did what he did, I don't excuse it, but I do understand it, and really, when it really boils down to things, can anyone say that they'd sooner let the only person in the entire world that they love die, for someone who they don't even like? The true crime of this entire thing isn't really that Seto was desperate enough to resort to suicide and emotional manipulation to win.... it's that he and Atem were both so stubborn and downright stupid that neither of them thought to actually communicate about why Seto needed to win in the first place, despite him saying repeatedly that he needed to save his brother and Atem saying repeatedly that he needed to save "his" grandfather, neither of them paused long enough to say "... We have a common goal, let's work together, or at the very least, come to a compromise" before resorting to such desperation, no one on this planet can seriously tell me that Atem wouldn't have jumped at the offer to save Mokuba if Seto had presented it to him, though, to be fair, I'll never understand why he didn't just offer to save Mokuba along with Grandpa in the first place (plot convenience really)
Although communication is an enormous problem with Seto and is one of the main reasons why he's always such a complete prick, he has a tendency to talk in code and to cover up what he means with what words he chooses to use, most likely because he A. Wasn't exposed to other children between the ages of 8-14 and before that most of his exposure was negative, and B. Was taught brutally that even the tiniest sign of compassion or understanding is weakness, and even the tiniest weakness is going to get you severely punished, he was already closed off to people during his stay at the orphanage, this just cemented that experience further
(And as a quick note, he acquired a company at 14-years-old, he was still a baby and running this God foresaken thing by himself, had no parental figure, still raising his brother ALONE, and let's also talk about how this 14-year-old BABY turned a weapons manufacturing company into a gaming company in less than two years, as he was sixteen during episode one of Duel Monsters)
To mention also: When faced with the fact that his company, that he had worked so extremely hard for, and that means so much to him, was being sold to Pegasus and he was being kicked out, where was his focus? Still on Mokuba, his brother was ALWAYS the absolute forefront of his focus during the entire Duelist Kingdom arc and his company played a very small second fiddle in comparison, I'm not sure if he even brought up the company more than once or twice during the entire arc, that's ... a little shocking all things considered
Additionally, despite how cold, untrusting, egotistical, and downright mean he can be, he outright thanks Yugi for rescuing Mokuba- twice- within the first season, once after Duelist Kingdom and once after Legendary Heros, that's kind of an enormous thing as Seto doesn't hand out gratitude easily.... though, speaking of gratitude we definitely have to confront the Joey-shaped elephant in the room
The way he treats Joey early on IS deplorable, he doesn't exactly treat any member of the Nerd Herd well, but things are especially prickly with Joey, and I'm unclear of the reasons for that- I don't think canon ever gives one- but I think of all of Seto Kaiba's ill moments, the way he treats Joey all the way up to late Battle City is without a doubt what I cringe at the most, he early on drives Joey so low into the ground that it gives him NIGHTMARES and is so ruthlessly horrible to him during that first encounter at Duelist Kingdom that I think, to date, it's the Kaiba thing I cringe at the most, I definitely don't excuse that behavior, and it burns me up like a firey demon when he refuses to thank Joey for being the one who ACTUALLY saved Mokuba, yet turns around and thanks Yugi instead, I'm also not exactly pleased with the fact that he tried to keep Joey out of his tournament but I really chalk that up mostly to Joey not having anything Seto wants and not being a duelist he respects vs outright cruelty, remember that for Seto, Battle City is ALL about getting the god cards and drawing out rare hunters, Red Eyes is Joey's rarest card but Seto never seems particularly impressed by it, and that coupled with him not respecting Joey's skills- as he believes he rode Yugi's coat tails through Duelist Kingdom- makes some sense as to why he wouldn't want him participating (outside of just disliking him) it would be counterproductive
The thing is, Seto DOES slowly shift out of "I legitimately hate your guts and am going to make sure you know it" and into "I'm going to pick on you because it's fun when you fight back and it's just how we communicate now", Battle City is a big turning point in my personal opinion, the second time Joey and Seto duel is still full of terribly mean words but the vibe is very different, from where I'm sitting, it feels alot more like an "I'm pulling your hair because I like you" type of thing and alot less like outright bullying for the sake of bullying, the fact that Joey doesn't take any of it to heart and just fights mean quip with mean quip the entire time is solid proof to me that the relationship is just mutual antagonism now and not so much outright bullying
Speaking of Battle City... there's alot of growth for Seto there, he works with Yugi and Atem frequently, at times by force (to save Mokuba) but at times because he wants to, he agreed to help Atem find the rest of the nerd herd before getting any word that Mokuba was taken because he wanted a duel for Atem's Slyfer card... even though all logic dictates that they probably would have faced eachother during the finals anyway and there is was literally no reason for Seto to follow him around begging for a duel like a five-year-old except for A. Impatience (not untrue) and/or B. Just .... wanting to, he could have so easily said "Find your own freinds, I'll get that Slyfer in the finals either from you or whoever beats you" but instead he spends his valuable time and energy tracking down Joey via his duel disk, and after all is said and done and Mokuba is safe...... he still helps Atem, he claims it's because he doesn't like owing people but that's never prompted him to go out of his way for Yugi and the others before (post Duelist Kingdom and Legendary Heros, Mokuba is the one who lets Yugi use the arena at Kaiba Land for his duel with Rebecca, here Seto has built up two favors that he owes and yet never says a word or makes an attempt to return them, so why does "owing" someone push him to keep helping Atem in Battle City when it didn't before? Either his "I don't like owing people" philosophy is new- wich is still charector growth- or he just wanted a reasonable excuse to keep helping Atem because he knew it was the right thing to do) Speaking of the right thing to do, when they DO track down Joey and Tea`, Seto is... surprisingly inactive during the duel, he has plenty of perfect opportunities to stop the duel somehow, and, if he was REALLY feeling cruel, to just outright steal Slyfer (wich Atem tossed aside when he started the duel) and get rid of both Atem and Joey by interrupting and making the anchor sink, yet he carefully keeps his distance until the timing is right for him to save Tea` because he doesn't want ANY of them to get hurt, not the rival he can't defeat, not the "third rate duelist" he supposedly hates, and not even someone (Tea`) who he barely knows
This is the same guy who gave an old man a heart-attack and used it as blackmail in episode one
Additionally, Seto immediately leaves after saving the day, that all-important duel that Atem owed him that he had FINALLY won? It didn't happen, Seto was still nagging him about it even after saving Mokuba, yet when it came time for Atem to FINALLY pay up he just..... walked off and said "nah see ya' in the finals", maybe he knew how exhausted Atem was and didn't want to duel him at half-power, maybe he was personally too tired to bother with it (although dueling to Seto seems to work the same way twenty-five cups of coffee does to a normal person so I doubt this) or maybe he just didn't feel like making Atem come through on his deal anymore, it doesn't really matter, it's all growth
And let me also point out that Atem wouldn't even have Slyfer if Seto hadn't given him a freaking pep talk in order to win it, Seto could have just as easily waited for Atem to lose and then dueled the mime for Slyfer- and that probably would have been smarter honestly, since Atem is the only one who has a history of defeating him- and yet.... he chooses to put energy into helping Atem instead
I feel like it's kind of understated that in the Battle City finals, Seto actually has a doctor and an infirmary on board the blimp, he claims that anyone who can't handle dueling at high altitudes and with raging winds isn't worth his time so what is the doctor and full medical bay doing there then? If he was that worried about Mokuba alone he would have had a much easier time just telling him not to go above deck, and if it was about law suits I tend to believe he wouldn't have people dueling on top of a freaking blimp in the first place, so he either anticipated Marik's shadowy shenanigans coming up (wich is a POOL of charector development on alot of different levels) or he anticipated accidents, people getting air sick, issues with the high altitude and what not, and figured that he'd better be completely prepared even for things like that wich are relatively small and not really needing of the tricked out medical bay (he had atleast one LIFE SUPPORT machine in there so obviously it went above and beyond just a first aid kit) Also, I know I said I was using the dub for this, but it's come to my attention that in the sub Seto is alot less of a jerk than he is in the dub about landing the blimp- originally, the ONLY problem is that the controls are screwy from the Noah incident (wich, by the way, is an enormous Thing all on it's own about Seto all on it's own, it's basically a showcase of Wow Was His Childhood Fucked Up, Let's Rub It In, and it's made clear just how impacted he was by his father and his father's company throughout, from the importance of his duel with Lecter being weapons-themed to his final duel with Guzaburo and saying "I won't be burried by you Guzaburo", giving up his chance to defeat Noah because he refused to hurt Mokuba, and the gem of telling Mokuba that everything he's done has been for him and a better future for them) and speaking of moments where the dub fucked up, I find another important gem during mid-Battle City when Tea` mentions that Seto actually lowered the price of duel disks "so everyone can play", that sounds alot less like a strict businessman and alot more like someone who just wants to offer kids the same escapism that he had when he was their age to me, a similar motivation I'm sure to why he opens up Kaiba Land
This is sadly where my "I'm greatly familiar with this material" knowledge comes to an end, as I only saw roughly half of the Orichalicos arc and that was too long ago for me to remember most of the small details in (plus I tend to kind of ... try to wipe that arc off the books considering that I find it to be a butchery of.. alot of things..)
Seto Kaiba is a complicated charector, he's very prickly and definitely an asshole- that's not in question- but I think he's really a very soft person when you peel back the initial layer, he's very good-hearted at his core, he just has an incredibly hard time expressing that- and for VERY understandable reasons, for all of his selfishness and egotism, he pours absolutely everything about himself into protecting his brother and gives alot of himself to trying to make things better for people (turning a weapons company into a gaming company may have been his dream but it was also an outlandishly hard task to accomplish and one that ultimately was better for the world, for example) there are moments where this all shines through but he tapes masks of coldness and insults and dueling metaphors over top of it because he just sincerely doesn't know how else to handle things, he IS, after all, still a 16-year-old child when the series begins, and I think he's only 18-19 at most when it ends, in the grand scheme of life, he's still practically a baby and has been thrust into so much adulthood that most 40-year-olds would have jumped ship already, he takes on the responsibility of his brother and his company and being a half-ass decent person (in so far as, you know, not blowing up the world or anything) without ever once complaining about it or trying to shrug it off or giving it ANYTHING but his all, and when you earn his trust and respect (as Atem and Yugi do) you get alot of loyalty and trust back- the shenanigans he goes through that he doesn't explicitly have to are good showings of this, and all of the ruthlessness his shows are purely survival instincts at their highest, he's had his company nearly taken away from him FOUR. TIMES. between Duelist Kingdom and the Orichalicos arc, FOUR. SEPERATE. TIMES. and I have an outstandingly difficult time believing that those were the first or last times that some crusty old men thought that a teenage C.E.O. would be easy prey to steal a multi-billion dollar company from, he's probably been white-knuckling that company since the day he took it over and I don't see that ending any time in the near future

A post that will only be of interest to maybe like two of my mutuals, but whatever, I want to write it. It’s a summary of the garbage Azureshipping fic I wrote many many years ago, while the dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh! anime was still airing. I included some excerpts from this story as well, though I’ve already shared them with a few of you. This story was never given a title, was never given an ending, is 350 handwritten pages long, and is crap. But I’m very fond of it even still. (BTW, this summary is very -very- streamlined. The work as a whole is a pure mess.)
Kaiba Corporation mysteriously goes under, and Seto and Mokuba are left penniless. I didn’t bother to going into detail regarding this, but it’s implied dark forces are at work. In the meantime, the brothers scrape by, living in a shabby apartment, and Seto seems to have given up. Yugi and Tea visit the brothers and Yugi offers to give them money, to which Seto’s attitude is, “Piss off! I don’t want your charity!” but as Seto’s turned away, Mokuba snatches the money from Yugi’s hand and whispers, “Thank you.” Meanwhile, in his dreams, Mokuba sees strange fragments of the past and the future.
Seto is deemed an incompetent parent to Mokuba by social services and Mokuba is taken away, but Mokuba runs away from the agency and takes to living on the streets for a string of days. A new Duel Monsters tournament is being held in a nearby city and Seto enters, hoping to win the grand cash prize, and is full of misery. Joey and Mai also enter this tournament. Seto and Joey duel, the two exchanging insults, but Seto wins and he proceeds to the finals. (I should mention I didn’t actually write any of the duels in this story. The moves are kept vague.) The final game is between Seto and Mai. Joey’s still unhappy about losing to Kaiba, meanwhile Yugi, “Yami,” and Tea watch the duel silently and uncomfortably. Tea then sees Mokuba in the crowd, watching his brother, and so in that moment she begins to cheer for Seto. Seto wins the duel and Mai doesn’t really seem to mind at all. But Seto isn’t given the prize money, because the tournament’s host has a grudge against Kaiba Corporation. (I don’t give any details for why.) And Mokuba vanishes, remaining hidden in the streets.
That night however, the Millennium Ring takes on a life of its own and teleports onto Mokuba’s body, and Yami Bakura’s energy possesses him. (I was making the Millennium Ring possess random people before DSoD made it cool!) Possessed Mokuba goes to the hotel Yugi and co. are staying in and he steals the Millennium Items, Joey’s deck and duel disk, and Tea’s cellphone, but Yugi and Tea catch him in the act. Possessed Mokuba races off into the night with the pair of friends in tow, when suddenly a man in a truck snatches up Mokuba (such an original plot point) and the Items from the street. The man rushes to an airplane held at the edge of the city, drives the truck into its cargo bay, and it flies off towards Egypt.
At some point around this part I decided this was going to be an Azure romance. While I realized the woman in Seto’s vision during his duel with Isis was far and away most likely not going to actually be Tea, I decided to give Tea a vision of that moment with the implication it’s her.
After finding him, Tea tells Kaiba what’s happened and he’s infuriated. Tea tells him to try tracking her cellphone and he does (just somehow), and they pinpoint his brother’s location in Egypt. Tea has enough money for two plane tickets, and while Seto isn’t happy about it, he needs to rescue Mokuba of course, and so she and Seto go together as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Yugi, Joey, and Tristan explain the situation to Mai and she decides to front the money for the four of them to fly to Egypt on another later flight.
Mokuba is still possessed by Yami Bakura as he’s brought to an underground temple in a secluded corner of Egypt. There are three siblings, who I make it clear care very much about each other: the oldest brother, the middle child who is the head of the group—a woman with short purple hair and wearing a black dress, and the youngest sister who has brilliant red hair and is in white robes. (I was ripping off the Ishtar siblings as villains before DSoD made it cool!) (I’ll also note it doesn’t seem they caused the collapse of Kaiba Corporation from earlier.) I wrote this story before the Millennium Scale was revealed in the anime, and it’s the Big McGuffin here. The siblings are the protectors of the Scale, which is said to be the most dangerous of the Millennium Items. The Scale is welded to a stone and only the chosen one may remove it, King-Arthur-and-the-Sword-style. There’s a prophecy inscribed in the temple walls, which states in part that the wielder of the Millennium Scale will become a vessel to filter evil from the Shadow Realm into the mortal world, and the siblings believe Mokuba is the chosen bearer of the Scale. Yami Bakura is gleeful at the chance to take hold of another Millennium Item but his spirit is unable to budge it, and touching the Scale ejects his grasp over Mokuba’s body. None the less, the siblings jump to the conclusion that they were mistaken, this boy is much too young to be the bearer anyway, and that it must be the older Kaiba brother who is the chosen one instead. Despite being the villains who kidnapped him, the trio are actually fairly hospitable to Mokuba. The middle sister is grouchy about how things have gone, though she’s happy to keep the Millennium Items for herself, and she has the friendly and pretty youngest sister (who is Mokuba’s age at that) take Mokuba into town in the morning.
Tea and Seto arrive at Egypt together and head to the place they’ve pinpointed, and in the town they find Mokuba waiting, and he and Seto have their sweet warm reunion at last. But tensions are high. Tea and Mokuba decide they need to get the Millennium Items back, and Seto agrees begrudgingly after Mokuba confronts him with, “How is it better?! What’s happened to you? You don’t care about anything anymore. […] If you go home I’ll come, but if you care, then help Tea get that stuff back.” Mokuba leads them to the temple in the nighttime and they sneak inside. They grab the collection of Items, but before they go, Mokuba finds himself strangely drawn to the Millennium Scale. It’s as if there’s a magical tug, and he goes to it and nudges it, whispering, “It is me…” before Tea and Seto call him to leave.
(Stuff gets really convoluted at this part and I’m really streamlining it here.) As they escape, Tea loses her sandals. There’s a confrontation with the trio of siblings, and soon Tea and Seto only have the Millennium Rod as all the other Items are stolen back, and the purple-haired woman challenges Mokuba to a duel for some weirdo reason, summoning the Shadow Realm as a test or something. Mokuba duels using Joey’s deck and duel disk but flounders. Tea shouts for Yugi, and with this, thousands of miles away, Yami realizes the others are in trouble. But as Mokuba’s about to lose, Seto uses the Millennium Rod to shatter the Shadow Realm, and so Mokuba’s soul is safe. Seto, Tea, and Mokuba steal the siblings’ car (noticeably not the truck; I don’t know what happened to the truck or airplane) and drive off, back towards the town.
Shadi appears to Mokuba in a vision spouting lofty nonsense about destiny at some point.
At nightfall, Tea and Seto have this embarrassingly written romantic moment:
[from pages 206 to 211; it’s goofy and bad and overwritten and so so so woobified]
““Oof!” she groaned w/ a loud thud, Tea had rolled off her bed onto the floor. There was no difference from when Tea had her eyes shut and when she had her eyes open, it was darker than the pitchest of blacks. “Hrmm,” she groaned rubbing her eyes, she was still very sleepy. As her eyes slowly adjusted, she could see an extremely dim light barely visible to the human eye seeping through the cracks of the flap hung over the back entryway as a tacky, cheap cover. Tea pushed up against the side of her invisible bed to help her stand and from there she felt her way round the tiny room, pushed through the flimsy flap to the outside world which left her totally breathless.
It was beautiful, the sky was speckled w/ what seemed like a trillion stars. Tea had never seen so many stars in her life. Back in Domino City, the bright lights almost always left the nightscape completely starless. Now that she was out in the middle of nowhere there wasn’t a single light source to fade the sky and everything from up in the heavens shown through, and she could see to the edge of the universe. Then Tea saw a dark figure radiating a faint silvery lining. It was Seto, staring off into the unknown. Seto didn’t seem the type to enjoy something as simple yet precious as stars, but this didn’t surprise Tea. There had been enough hints of his fascination w/ the sky. From how he held his tournament on a blimp and a high up tower, to him simply peering out the window as they flew here. Even his favorite duel monster could fly far up into the atmosphere.
She walked over and stood next to him. They didn’t look at each other, they didn’t say anything, there was absolute quiet, but the quiet didn’t bother Tea this time. The 2 just stared off into the silvery-blue desert silently. There was a gentle breeze, a soft whirling sound pierced the air.
“Why are you up?” Seto finally said in a tender voice, his eyes still fixed up to the moonless starscape.
“hmm, oh, I fell off my bed,” Tea quietly replied, “and why are you still up? We found Mokuba and you’ve been awake for several days straight.”
“more like a month”
“A month? You haven’t been to sleep for a month? Is that even physically possible?”
“Unless you count me passing out, yes.”
“Why?” He didn’t say anything, he shut his eyes like he was trying to sleep standing up. Tea looked at him, he was so broken. “Seto? Erk- I mean Kaiba!” she shook her head trying to snap some common sense into herself, “Sorry, I’ve been hanging w/ Mokuba too much and I’m starting to talk like him.” Why do I keep calling Kaiba Seto? I-
“Tea, Seto’s my name,” he reopened his eyes slowly, “you’re suppost to call people by their name. I never got why you and your pals call me Kaiba.”
“Well that is your last name,” she pointed out to him.
“My adopted last name. The name of my evil, wicked stepfather. Don’t even have the company anymore.”
Seto’s stepfather, a topic his mind seemed hopelessly stuck on. It haunted him in ways no one else could ever really understand, as icy essence that would always linger in the back of his thoughts. He was a little boy, the forgotten boy lost in time, forever running from this tangled fear, forever trapped in this endless chase, too afraid to stop and be devoured by this monster locked inside his frigid heart. Too afraid to even look back.
“You really don’t like your past, do you?”
His eyes were hollow and lifeless. Seto slowly rocked his head back and forth, lost somewhere in a numbing trance.
“Was it really that bad for you? I mean if that creep hadn’t adopted you, you never would of…” Tea stopped herself. Since he no longer held the position of president for Kaiba Corp, all the good had been sucked away from his adoption.
“It depends whether you value youth or not. Guess I did. But I just have to put all that behind me.”
“You mean forget?”
“It’s nice for your little friends to spit at me for that, especially when they have no idea what it was like.”
“You’ll never forget trying to forget, because in trying to forget you’ll remember and it will always be there. Don’t try and forget, try and let go,” Tea explained. Seto remained stuck in his daze. “So do you not like being called Kaiba? Besides Mokuba, and me too I guess, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody call you by anything else.”
“It was alright when I owned Kaiba Corp, it was one of my accomplishments, earning that name. But now it shows my failure.”
“If it bothered you so much, why didn’t you tell us?”
“What ever.”
“Ah. Well anyway, why can’t you sleep?” she asked getting back to the point, returning the conversation’s personality back to quiet and mellow.
“I just can’t, I lost my company, I lost Mokuba,” he explained to her.
“Stressed out then?”
“I’m a failure, a throwaway…”
This was not the Seto Tea grew to know, before all this rained down on him, Seto was always going on how much more superior he was to the others, now he was ranting how much more worthless he was. “Oh come now, you’re not a failure. Your company was stolen, I know you don’t believe in magic, but it was some ancient magic power that did this. You’d only be a failure if it was actually your fault, and it’s not. You’re really smart and skilled, I’m sure you’ll eventually bounce back. We’ll fix this. You know what they say, when you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up.”
“And you fall right back down,” he grumbled.
Tea was not getting through to this guy, “What do you mean?”
“What do you care? This is only going to result in one of your long, annoying speeches like it always does.”
“It does not.”
“Oh yes it does. You don’t even know the half of it.”
“Tell you what, if I promise to not say a single thing will you tell me?” she coaxed trying to come to a compromise.
He hesitated, feeling Tea’s waiting gaze upon him. “Look at my life, it’s a disaster, it just goes up and down, up and down, it never stops.” Seto quivered a little as he spoke, “Everytime I think things are starting to look good, I plumbit back down. My and Mokuba’s parents died, our remaining relatives stole our inheritance and then just dumped us off at an orphanage and no one cared for us. I tricked a rich CEO into adopting us and I thought things might change, but he turned out to be a heartless, dictating snake, so I overthrew him and took control of his company. Things were okay for a while, and now this! I have nothing, everyone hates me! My life has been ripped to shreds!”
Tea looked at him, she had never heard Seto talk so openly. His eyes looked so sad. She had known a little about Seto’s rugged past, but for some reason hearing it made her finally understand Seto’s bitterness, his distrust for people. “Everyone does not hate you, what about Mokuba? He doesn’t hate you.”
“Yes he does. And I can’t blame him. I’m a horrible person…”
“He just wishes you’d be more light hearted, try having fun. I mean, why aren’t you ever happy? Try smiling every once in a while.”
“Yes, I should try smiling, who cares how I actually feel? I should just pretend to be happy and smile, even if I’m dead inside, cause as long as I’m smiling everything’s alright.”
Tea thought about that for a second. “Are you really always that unhappy?”
“Speech, Tea. This is turning into a speech.”
“Well I can’t help it, you’re ranting on about how tenuous a life you have, and maybe you’re right, but you’re afraid of your past, you’re afraid of your future, I strongly doubt you like your current position, what is it you want? What would have to happen to make you happy?”
He finally turned to look at her, his deep blue eyes reflecting the dazzling stars. Tea felt a bizzar pull to him, like some force was bringing them together, it was weirding her out. Just a week ago the thought of talking to Seto left a foul taste in her mouth, she had been beating herself up for dragging herself here w/ him. But not anymore, instead of talking at him, she was talking to him, she could see the world through his eyes, everything had changed.
“You promised you wouldn’t say anything,” he gently said.
“Sorry, I forgot,” she whispered back. The 2’s personalities were an absolute contrast, there was no chance of ever hitting common ground, Tea was a jovial, kind-hearted girl, Seto was a bitter, withdrawn boy who lost his place. Still, there was a strong connection between them as they gazed back up into the star-frosted heavens, absorbing it’s pale silver glow.”
That same night, Yugi, Yami, Joey, Tristan, and Mai arrive in Egypt.
In the morning, Seto gives Tea his shoes, and she, he, and Mokuba have a “day of fun” in the town since they don’t know how they’ll get home yet. Seto plays a casual duel with Tea as if it was a lesson. Seto and Mokuba go off together and leave her alone for a bit as well. Later, sitting and watching the sunset together, Seto finally falls asleep and he slumps gently against Tea.
Then Tea’s friends find them and it’s all bustle and explaining things. They decide they’ll make another attempt to re-capture the Millennium Items because this shit is dangerous. Seto leaves them. When Tea meets him later, he pulls out the Millennium Rod from under the bed and asks her why she didn’t tell her friends about it, and she tells him it’s his. He forces it into her hands but she holds it back out to him. Seto then places his hand over hers on the Rod and bends down to her but she stumbles back, saying she should be getting back to the others now, and he lets her go.
Tea, Yugi, Yami, and Mokuba go to the temple and approach the Scale on the stone together (apparently the sibling villains are really really incompetent at guarding it). Tea guesses that Yami is the chosen one and he steps forward, but something feels wrong and evil, and Mokuba begins to see things and is able to read the scripture on the walls. Tea tries to comfort him. Then the purple-haired woman confronts them. She tells the group it’s one of the Pharaoh’s rivals who can pick up the Scale, and Mokuba feels confused as he hears this. She gives them the Ring as a peace offering. She offers to return the Millennium Necklace to them if they would be so kind as to bring Seto Kaiba to her to activate the Scale.
Tea and Yami aren’t sure what to do next, but as they leave with the Ring they find Seto standing outside the temple. As it should turn out, some kind of hallucinatory vision had carried him along with them and he’s just as confused as they are. They tell him about the situation. Mokuba, knowing he’s the only one who can remove the Scale and wanting to put an end to all this, tells Seto to try it. Seto does and is able to lift it with ease, and Mokuba is shocked. (The idea is Mokuba’s nudge was enough to free it, but he didn’t realize that.) The purple-haired woman is ecstatic, reveals that there’s dark magic inside the Item, and she challenges Seto to a duel to claim the Item’s powers. The youngest sister goes to Mokuba’s side. The woman and Seto duel, everyone watching, and Seto wins.
And so Yugi, Yami, Seto, Mokuba, and Tea leave with all the Items in their possession, but Yami and Tea are very concerned. They return to the others, and Mokuba is disturbed as things are explained and considered.
Here’s another excerpt:
[from pages 305 to 316; bad bad bad and overwritten and woobified again, now with terrible melodrama]
“Seto leaned over the sink in the inn’s bathroom. It’s edges were lined with scuz and sludge ringed the foucet, it’s handle was very loose. There was a shower, but it didn’t work. Washing his hair in the sink had grown used to him. He had done it back when he and his brother were living in that broken down apartment of deferred dreams and causes, and at the airport in London while waiting for his and Tea’s plane to arrive, but being without soap he couldn’t get it too clean. He wished the water was colder.
“Seto, are you OK?” Mokuba asked him standing in the restroom’s doorway.
He didn’t look up, “Why?” he said through the dribbling sound of running water.
“Because the girl you decided to f-“
“Mokuba, please.”
“Sorry,” his eyes shifted to the millinium scale that had carelessly been laid on the floor, “Heads up, Joey and Tristan might try to steal that from you.”
“Steal what?”
“The millinium scale, for some reason they seem to think it’ll make you go crazy or something.”
“Idiots. And let me guess, Tea-“
“Did nothing. Talk to her already, or do you want me to do it for you?”
Seto finally pulled his head out from under the grummy, near-broken sink. “Mokuba, you’re not helping,” he said as he squeezed the water out of his tangled hair with his fingers. Then he picked the polished scale off the floor. “See, this is why I don’t make friends,” he grumbled, “I knew this would happen.”
“Seto, you can’t just give up, that’s so unlike you.”
“She’s made her choice, let it be.” He walked out of the restroom, his hair damp and spirit low, “I have nothing, I don’t deserve her care.”
Mokuba stared blinklessly at his brother a bit horrified at what he was saying. Seto walked away and disappeared down the sliver of a hallway.
Hours were swept away never to be retrieve or re-lived again. The brief sandstorm had passed away a short while after noon broke, and the gang would of probably started to head to a city and airport so they could set their sights on home, but w/ this idea an ugly problem showed it’s face. Not even half of them could fit into that pathetic car to transport them anywhere, so for the moment they were stuck.
“OK, here’s my plan,” Tristan announced.
“If it involves leaving Seto and I stranded here…”
“First off, no it doesn’t,” he replied to Mokuba. Everyone was sitting outside in a ring formation, discussing ideas and ways to tackle this issue, everyone except Seto. He was off leaning against the side of a building feeling feverish and soaking in his aloofness. “Tea, did you ever get your cell phone back?” Tristan continued on.
“Umm,” Tea reached into the shallow pocket of her brilliant apple red skirt with grey, yellow, and forest green cross hatching, “yeah, why?” she said as she felt it’s hard, plastic surface.
“Cause we can call someone up then to come and pick us up or drop off another car or something.”
“And who do you propose we call Tristan?” Mai said.
“I dunno, anyone.”
“Yo, Kaiba! Do you have any ideas?” Joey yelled over at Seto, who was nodding off, “Hey, wake up! It’s not night time yet!”
“You always have to find some way to make a nussence of yourself Wheeler, don’t you?” he said, “figure something out for yourself for once.” Seto pushed off the building and walked away wishing not to be bothered anymore.
“Fine! We don’t need your help!” Joey barked at him as he left.
Tea watched as he turned into the building. “Ahh, I have to go to the bathroom.” She hopped to her feet and followed Seto’s footprints that he left in the pale, colorless sand. Mokuba crossed his fingers.
Unaware of the fact Tea had followed him, Seto let himself fall limp onto one of the beds, his worn out body, as weak and tired as it was, had reached it’s limit. How he could stay as perky as he’s been he’d never figure out. He heard someone else enter the room. “Tea?” his heart lifted a bit.
“Um, yeah, Kaiba, where’d you put the millinium rod? Cause the thing of it is-“
*Clank* Seto had quickly pulled it out from under the bed and threw it bitterly against the wall. The loud sound it made as it clashed against the wall made Tea flinch, she hadn’t expected him to throw it. He didn’t throw it at her, in fact he had thrown it at the opposite end of the room from which she stood, sending a strong message.
“Take it,” he spat.
She glared at him for a second, then moved over to pick it up. Right now she didn’t know how the rod’s magic might affect Seto, and it was Yugi’s. It was wrong for her to have handed it over to him to begin w/.
“Tea?” Seto said, his voice had calmed down and now came off as tender.
But Tea ignored him and went back outside. The second she passed through the cloth flap though she stopped and looked down into the millinium rod held in her grasp. What had she just done? Part of her wanted to run back immediately into the room and return it to him. No, she couldn’t do that, what was wrong w/ her? She wished it would just disappear right out of her hand.
“Tea? You took it back?”
Tea shot her head up. There Mokuba stood before her, his glassy, oversized eyes reflecting the deep navy sky painted over w/ pale pink clouds.
“Huh, oh, well it’s Yugi’s,” she said.
“You’re taking it back because you’re afraid he’s evil aren’t you?”
“No, it wasn’t mine to give away to begin with. I’m taking it back because it’s my friend’s,” she told him.
“Seto is your friend!” he cried.
“Um,” Tea became figety and nervous, she squeezed the millinium rod so hard her knuckles turned white, “I have to go, they’re expecting me back you know.” She brushed past him and headed back to Mai, Joey, Tristan, Yami, and Yugi.
Mokuba clamped his teeth hard together. He couldn’t just let it be, this was wrong. “Why are you ignoring Seto?!” he angrily yelled at her.
Tea didn’t even get 6 feet away. She stopped and turned back to look at him, “Mokuba?” she weakly muttered.
“How could you just of forgotten this past couple days?” Mokuba had so many things worrying him, so many thing picking at his stability, but he thought he could finally stop worrying about his brother being friendless. He wasn’t about to let Tea piss it all way. “He opened up to you, doesn’t that mean anything? I’ve never seen him open up to anyone before until now. Why have you just thrown it all away?” He looked at her, hungry for her reply.
“I- Mokuba. It’s really complicated and we just don’t know. I’m sorry my friends don’t trust him right now. My friends and I have been through so much together, I can’t just abandon them,” she explained.
“So you abandoned Seto?!”
She didn’t know what to say. Mokuba was exactly right. “Look, this is really hard for me-“
“-Not as hard as it is for him.” Mokuba cut in, his voice grew serious and low, “No one has ever cared for us before like this, until you. Even when Seto pushed you away, you still stuck by him. And it meant something to him, it really did.”
“Mokuba, what am I suppost it do?! My friends mean more than anything to me and they’re concerned,” she cried, “And I mean more than anything to them. Our friendship is forever.”
“Your friendship with him could be forever too…”
“I’m sorry Mokuba, I just can’t.” She slowly turned back around, staring empty into the ground. But before she could head off anywhere, Mokuba said one last thing that caused her to freeze up.
“He loves you!”
Tea quickly jerked her head back around, “Love? That’s an awfully strong word.”
“Well he does.”
“Mokuba, don’t take this the wrong way, but your brother doesn’t seem the type to fall in love,” she told him.
“I know, and that’s what’s so cool about it. I never thought Seto could grow so attached to someone, but he did, and it’s you!” Mokuba looked pained, she could see he was telling the truth. “He loves you, he told me! It was yesterday, when we went off for a walk…”
-- “Seto,” he said snapping his pendant shut, “I have a question. It’s about you and Tea.”
“What about me and Tea?” he lazily replied snapping his pendant shut as well.
“Are you guys like friends or something? I mean I’ve never seen you like this before,” Mokuba asked.
Seto had his eyes fixed over the sands of the desert as they bathed in the deep orange rays of the sun, “Yeah, well, no one’s ever cared for me like this before,” he replied in a tone that Mokuba never quite heard his brother use before.
“I care,” he said.
“Not like this, this is this is different…” his voice was so soft.
“Oh my gosh,” it hit Mokuba, his later bloomer brother was finally, “You lo-“
“Weird, isn’t it?”
“I never thought I’d see the day where Seto Kaiba falls in love,” he said joyously, “Tell her!”
“Mokuba, we’re going to have to go back to reality eventually. You’ll be placed in foster care, who knows where I’ll be, and once Tea meets her little friends again, she’ll forget about us,” he cooly explained.
“No, Tea wouldn’t do that!” Mokuba argued, “Tell her!”
Seto let out a weak sigh, “We’ll see…” he said, shutting his eyes slowly. --
“… And he was right!” Mokuba cried, “The second your stupid friends showed up you forgot about us!”
“… Seto loves me?” Tea slowly mumbled as if in a dream, and to be honest, not all too surprised to be informed of this.
“Yes, or at least he did. But then you started ignoring him,” he said calmly, “Tea, I understand that you would care much more for your old friends than you would ever for Seto, but you mean so much to him. Very few people have ever gotten to his heart, in fact there’s only 2, me and you. But once you’re there, trust me on this, you’re never coming out. You know, I always knew eventually down the road you’d be forced into choosing, but I thought it’d be Seto’s doing, not your friends, what does that tell you about them?”
“Mokuba, it’s not like that!”
“Are they really your real friends?”
“You know how close we are, of course they are!” she growled disgusted.
Mokuba paused, he paused for a long while, staring longlingly into her eyes. And then he walked away, off towards the rising silver sliver of a moon.
Tea watched him as he shrank away into nothing, she was alone now, left to think over everything that had just been told. The millinium rod was a retreat, for her to compare the Kaiba she once knew to the Seto she now knows. Tea stared into the gold for several minutes, studying the warped reflections. Her decision was made as she remembered she was wearing Seto’s shoes. He had been walking around bare foot this whole time.
The sun was swallowed up by the earth, a few white speckles had been sprayed into the deep heavens. The clouds that hung in the sky had transformed into a brass color, it was pretty.
“Where the heck is Tea?!” Joey grouched.
“Calm down Joey, girls always take a long time in the bathroom.”
“Hey!” Mai spat at Tristan, who snickered.
“She’s probably off talking to that brat Kaiba again. What the heck is going on with them?” Joey grunted.
Yami? It was Yugi, his spiritual essence hovered around Yami like a mist.
Yes Yugi? All their talking was done telepathically, both being souls trapped in the same body.
Don’t you think it’s kind of mean to assume Kaiba might go crazy from the millinium scale? Yugi had been neutral since the start of all this, in fact the truth was he was rooting for Seto. And Yami had been neutral too up until this morning, but something changed.
These items are dangerous. We have to protect Kaiba and Tea too. Yami replied.
Who do you think you’re kidding? This isn’t about us and Tea, this is about you and Tea. Ever since we saw them watching the sunset you’ve been weird. I can see your thoughts. I think you’re jealous.
Jealous?
Can you admit it or not? Talk to her.
I can’t.
Why not?
Yugi, I live inside a piece of jewelry, just a spirit who takes temporary control over your body. I’m not even sure how long I’ll be here…
What will it hurt? Hey, you 2 have been through so much together, how could she reject you? If it calms you down, I’m for it.
Different parts of Tea’s head pulled her different ways. Eventually Seto had come out of the room. If he had seen her, he gave no acknowledgement. Up against the grit wall, Tea just observed him for a minute. Once again she found him staring up into the sky speckled w/ silver. She walked up silently to him.
“Seto?” she barely murmured. He didn’t look back at her. “Seto?” she repeated, a little louder this time.
“So you’re calling me Seto again?” he finally said, his voice cold and dead.
“Well that is your name,” she playfully replied, but it was obvious Seto was in no such mood.
“I’m not sure I want you calling me by that anymore.”
She held out the millinium rod to Seto, despite the fact he wasn’t facing her, “Here, take it,” she insisted, “I didn’t give it back to Yugi. You don’t take back a gift.”
Seto stood stiff, still staring into the sky’s great vastness. Everything became a shade of blue as the stars and moon cast majestic silver shadows over the earth.
“Mokuba said you loved me.”
“Did he?”
“You’re not angry at him, are you?”
“Why would I be angry at him?”
“Because he either lied to me or spilled out your secret.”
Seto finally spun around to her, “Is it really that big of a secret?”
Tea looked away, “… no.” She already knew, ever since she first cheered for him when he dueled against Mai, she felt something changed. That was the turning point. She looked back over at him, “Seto, I’m sorry. It’s just- my friends just appeared out of nowhere, and you guys kept fighting over nothing, and they got worried about these stupid items and prophecies, and I didn’t know. We’ve been through so much, but th-“
“Tea, stop talking.” Seto took 2 steps towards her. She found herself staring into his eyes. She had never noticed before how they changed color. Sometimes they looked turquoise, other times they were almost lavender, now they were very distant and dark. Hope lived in them again.
And that left her to think about yesterday, when they almost- If her friends hadn’t suddenly shown up, would she have gone through w/ kissing him? The more she thought about if she’d have done it, the more she saw herself doing it.
He was so close to her, it should have been uncomfortable, but it wasn’t, it really wasn’t.
Are you sure about this? Yami asked Yugi.
What are you afraid of?
They were slowly traveling over to where Tea had vanished off to. Yugi and Yami at this point had figured that, being gone for as long as she was, Tea had gone off to Seto. But they were OK w/ this. Yami just wanted to get the facts known and get the facts out there. What was Yami so nervous over? It’s not like Seto had any romantic interest in Tea…
Yami froze, and from a distance watched the lip-locked couple numbly. Yugi was in shock as well.
… that’s… interesting…”
I know there are about 35 more pages to the story, but it’s at this point when it begins to fizzle out. It’s more that it takes that many pages for the story’s thrust to finally die.
I wrote this story during a dark place in my life and it became a kind of oasis for me. I felt alone and full of anger and self-loathing, but when I was writing, those feelings dimmed and it was like I could breathe for a moment.
I’m sorry to anybody whose time I wasted with this nonsense, but this was once something very meaningful to me. That’s all.

History (This section contains mentions of past child abuse)

Briefly explain life story:
Seto’s parents passed away while he was still young, his morther dying when Mokuba was born and his father following fairly shortly after when Kaiba was around eight. His father and his mother had been the image of love that to Kaiba seemed ideal, and he noticed after her passing that his father never seemed entirely whole. After being sent to the orphanage and realizing that he was the only person that Mokuba had left in the world to rely on, he decided to step up as a protector, deciding that he would do everything in his power to help protect his brother because he was (and is still) the most important person in his life. He was generally a happy child in spite of the tragedy that seemed to mar his childhood. He found a lot of joy in playing board and card games with his younger brother. In his late childhood is when Gozaburo arrived at the orphanage when he was around the age of 10. After winning chess against Gozaburo he has hoped to improve the life of him and his brother, however he wasn’t aware of the trauma that would ensue at the hands of the millionaire. He was groomed to be a perfect heir, which would mean regular beatings and cruel and unusual punishments when he would show resistance of any kind.
It wasn’t until Kaiba’s early teen years that Mokuba showed any real knowledge of the abuse that Kaiba faced. Mokuba was a great comfort to his brother, but that didn’t stop the effects of extended trauma setting in for Kaiba. He would often have nightmares, severe anxiety as well as going through periods of extreme irritability, hostility, and isolation. Kaiba carried these behaviours with him well past his adoptive father’s death and in general refused to let anyone in close enough to hurt him aside from Mokuba. His exhibition of PTSD symptomns were extreme, but he didn’t seek help for them, not realizing that there was a problem. In his late teens he was extremely volatile, and would lash out wontonly at people around him, especially anyone who tried to worm their way into his heart.
Kaiba’s adult life had a rough start, feeling extremely lost and at a period of near self-destruction. He hit a massive rut between his late teens and early twenties and would regularly seek out comfort in alcohol. His nightmares, anxiety and depression were extremely intense. At this point in his life Mokuba voiced concerns and urged him to seek professional help, which he finally did around the age of 21. With help he functions better, but still struggles with it for many years, though he does progress and become less liable to snap and lock people out entirely.
Relationships
Parents: Parents are deceased. Doesn’t remember his mother well, but had a fairly good relationship with his father. On the other hand, he hates having his adoptive father, Gozaburo Kaiba, brought up to him, and will shut down or become aggressive if he is.
Siblings: Mokuba - Kaiba’s relationship with Mokuba is generally very positive. As with all brothers, they do argue sometimes, but since Kaiba woke up from his coma and got some priorities straight, he has realized that his brother is the most important person in the whole world to him, and he would do anything to see his brother happy and safe.
Any enemies (and why): Kaiba has many professional enemies, both inside and outside of his company. Outside of professional situations, he doesn’t tend to make an enemy of most people – rather he considers them rivals such as Yugi and Joey/Jounouchi. (He will never admit to the ladder if he can help it.)
Friends: Kaiba doesn’t really have “friends” in the traditional sense. He would consider Mokuba his closest friend, and more reluctantly he would consider Yugi a friend perhaps three arm lengths removed.
Combat
Peaceful or violent: Generally nonviolent but is quick to defend himself or use cruel indirect means to get people out of his way or out of his life. Has definitely eased up some in his older years.
Others
Occupation: Kaiba Corporation CEO
Current home: Kaiba Mansion, Domino, Japan
Pets: Kaiba generally doesn’t keep pets. He prefers more the more “intelligent” and “quiet” animals, so animals like Cats or Birds are more up his alley, though he doesn’t go out of his way to adopt them.

Ettushipping for the ask!!!!
Ah~ Thank you for asking about the OTP. I kind of figured I’d have nothing to say about it except repeating what I answered about polar and JouKai for the meme, but I shouldn’t have underestimated myself x_x  I also apologise, because it feels impossible for me to talk about them without talking about my fic project talking about writing fic instead of writing it so this might not be all that exciting mea culpa, but imma post - no obligation to pay attention to me - thankies~
when I started shipping it if I did:
In 2015, I was watching a lot ofygotas, feeling kind of bummed out, and looking through fanfiction. And I kindof had an ongoing interest in fmm and ffm polyships at this point, so I waslike, ‘okay, let’s smash my two favourite ships together and read all theMaiJouKai’.
A few minutes and some searchesaround the net later, I came to the tragic realisation that there /was/ noMaiJouKai. And then I was like, ‘fuck that. What has fandom spent the lastfifteen years doing then?’ and decided to write my own.
So I wrote a fic called On Public Relations and IndefiniteDefinitions which, instead of being the humorous longform fic I wanted toread, was some oneshot filled with Kaiba angsting about how he not only endedup with this moron, but he ended up with this moron that he’s kind of afraidwill leave him for Mai. It was also about the paparazzi, and the fact that Jouis Kaiba’s kind-of employee, and trying to understand where exactly we draw theline on somebody being a golddigger, and how to reconcile vastly differentlevels of income in a relationship. And, tbh, the fic is kind of shitty imo,but it still has some interesting ideas in it that are more or less ignored orunexplored so far as I’ve been able to see (and also it’s my humble fanficroots so I appreciate it for that).
I kind of dropped the fic and ran,and was going to just leave it at that. But then about a year later, due tomore ygotas and a sudden desire to revisit manga canon and watch the rest ofthe dub, I dropped back into the fandom and started revisting the ideas I’ddropped in my fic. I came to realise I really wanted to reuse the ship andbasic premise and try to write a fic where (1) Kaiba and Jou’s relationshipgoes from its approximate canon form with all the animosity to a romanceonscreen, (2) you’re given a lot of the factors commonly used to cause Mai& Jou to break-up except considered and explored in their own right in thecontext of Mai and Jou actually being invested in and feeling strongly for eachother, (3) Jou is working for Kaiba and the issues involved inemployee/employer relationships are laid out without an attempt to villainiseeither character, (4) wealth and poverty are not just having or not-havingmoney (something that could then easily be solved by Mai or Kaiba handing Jou acheck) but an entire relationship with money and employment and society andself-expectation and the cause of pretty severe cultural misunderstandings, (5)etc. etc. Yeah, this fic has way too many themes in it.  I mean, more than anything I wanted a ficabout Jounouchi’s entire existence postcanon – every single one of hisrelationships – and this ended up being a good way to do it. And, jeez, if thiswasn’t my OTP before I started planning LottoTicket, it definitely was after.
my thoughts:
idk, part of me is like, ‘you’rejust being really self-indulgent and forcing your two favourite ships into one, aren’t you?’ and then the other part of me is like, ‘but I don’t feel at alllike I’m forcing the characters to behave in any way that’s unnatural for them.I mean, I certainly commandeer the situational factors to make them moresusceptible to certain behaviour, but it doesn’t even feel very outlandish. Infact, the more I think about it, the more I think the ship as a whole couldease a lot of the individual tensions of its components.’
idk, I think the true answer is…both. It’s both indulgent and reasonable.
But I feel like I should say, insofar as my WIP is going, I’m not attempting to justify it as a ship thatwill last until everyone is dead, as much as I’m attempting to justify it assomething that helps brings stability to the characters during this ratherspecific period in their lives. I might eventually write something thatattempts to do more with the ship in the future, but I think those willdefinitely be more on the silly and fun and wholly indulgent side of things.
What makes me happy about them:
That Mai gets to travel and duel,Seto gets to have his company and its projects, and Jou doesn’t have to feel unsupportedand completely attention-starved in the meantime.
Also I’ve talked before about howSeto and Jou can pretty easily create a positive feedback loop for terriblebehaviour. I think having another person involved is one of the easiest ways tointercept that. It doesn’t have to be Mai, and it doesn’t have to be somebodyone or both of them are romantically involved with, but it does have to besomeone close enough to them, that they can witness the cause and effect oftheir behaviour on the emotional aspects of their relationship, and that Jouand Kaiba can’t just turn to and say, ‘buzz off, our relationship is our ownprivate business’. I think Mai and Jou, in different ways, both end upmediating quite a bit between Jou & Kaiba and Mai & Kaiba respectively.Kaiba less so for Jou & Mai, but I think, even in his presence, he canencourage Mai and Jou to consider when they’re being inattentive andunreasonable with each other respectively.
What makes me sad about them:
The amount of trickery I have to useto get them together, lol. I’ve tricked Seto into thinking Joey is gay andsingle. If he knew Joey was bi and had a girlfriend, I don’t think he’d beentertaining this idea for even a second. That’sright, Seto, let’s get you nice and overly invested ahead of time so you can’tdismiss the idea out of hand~
idk, everyone’s an insecure mess, but… even if I was writing for a more proper triad/threesome like miranova’settushipping, or battleshipping, or how I think most people talk aboutflareshipping, I imagine Seto at some point pitching a fit about how the othertwo like each other more than they like him. It is inevitable. It’s only amatter of how terrible the explosion is, and how well they manage to reassureeach other in the aftermath. So isn’t MaiJouKai as a V even worse because, ontop of all the personal insecurity, you’ve got a lot of societal messagingabout how you probably shouldn’t let yourself feel secure in letting your boyfriendsleep with someone else? idk, I see why Vs aren’t that popular in fandom. Before this I’d mostly shipped polyships where all the people were sexuallyinvolved. But I feel like, if you read a lot of OT3s, you realise how that mostof them are Vs on one level or another – it’s pretty naïve to think you’regoing to find two other people you feel equally strongly about in all theimportant™ ways, who are also going to feel equally strongly about you and eachother in those same important™ ways. Maybe it’s also naïve to think that aninequality in a sexual fashion is more profound than an inequality in anemotional one? I mean, /I/ think sexuality in relationships is one of thehigher ranked things in terms of profundity, but I don’t think everyone thinksso. Jou and Mai and Kaiba probably don’t agree with me or each other on thattopic – everyone has a different set of values, right? …I guess it makes me sadthat I don’t know whether or not they can make a poly relationship work incorrespondence with their expectations for a relationship – whether thoseexpectations are based on their own needs or on kind of a societalunderstanding of what a relationship should be – but maybe I shouldn’t say thatmakes me sad like that’s the end of the story either? When you are curious anddon’t know the answer – that’s a time when your mind is still open to newinformation and possibilities, right? You can let the characters bounce offeach other without an investment in the answer. That’s a fun place to writefrom.
things done in fanfic that annoy me & things I look for in fanfic:
lol, what fic? I liked Love Boat, although it’s more arrogantshipping than ettu.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
I think it’s pretty clear I ship allthe people with all the people at this point. Anyone can end up with anyone andI’d be comfortable with it if it was considered with care.
My happily ever after for them:
I feel like it came up in a memeonce, or as a response to a fic comment, or something of that nature. Jou andMai and Seto are at some sporting event for their kid. Jou and Mai are theembarrassingly loud and enthusiastic parents who are ready to fight anyone thatsays their kid isn’t the greatest. It’s a hot summer day and Seto is wearing aheavy jacket and shades and being incredibly unemotive. He’ll save hiscongratulations until the end, thanks.
That’s a happily ever after of sorts, right?
who is the big spoon/little spoon:
idk, about spoons, but sleepposition headcanon is that Seto and Mai both like sleeping in the middle whenall three of them share a bed. It is the warmest and most comforting spot. AndI’ve already said that Seto is always cold, and Mai likes feeling safelyenclosed.
(Oh, god, Seto probably starts a riotthe first time Mai wakes him up and teasingly tells him to move because he’spopping wood into her stomach/thigh. For a while he refuses to sleep near herat all. And then for a while he refuses to sleep near her except with his back facingher.)
what is their favorite non-sexual activity:
For all three of them together? Sleeping. That’s aboring one though, lol. I think they like going to tournaments together, eitherwhen somebody’s competing or none of them are.
I think more they like doing things just the two ofthem though. I answered for Jou and each of the others, but for Seto and Mai –they probably go to gallery openings or something, or get lunch and talk shopabout work and talk smack about everyone. Mai’s an easy guest for Seto to taketo business party type things too. She’s all the charm and he can just sit nextto her and lean into her shoulder and zone out while she’s socialising.
:’)  Thank you again~

I had to go way out of my way, but I managed to get to a theater to see “YGO: Dark Side of Dimensions” over the weekend.
Ugh, so good!
Tumblr media
[ disjointed rant and spoilers under the ‘read more’ ]
(I don’t know the spelling of anyone’s names and I’m just guessing, so I apologize in advance.)
Things that made me happy:
Yugi and Ryou kept exchanging special looks and smiles and it was so precious. (my inner heartshipper kept smiling so big omg)
Joey spent an afternoon with Ryou, seemingly preparing his deck/duel disk for dueling.
Yugi gets to duel on his own against Aigami/Deva and Kaiba, but he still gets to see Atem again one last time.
Atem is literally just watching everything from his afterlife palace and I find that amusing. I wonder if the rest of the royal court and the thief often watch with him or anything.
Tea, Tristan, and Duke were all great.
I like the part where Joey starts fading and then Atem shows up to send him home, and Joey just appears in the real world with a blinding flash of light, bowing on the ground. He was /bowing/ to Atem.
Flipping Karita-sensei.
Shadi is finally useful. (I’m sorry, but I’ve had issues with Shadi’s character since the first time I saw him, so I was happy that the story was at least encouraging me to appreciate Shadi in some way.)
OMG KAIBA. Just ... Kaiba in general. Every single second with over the top drama-lord. Absolutely incredible.
I loved the voices omg I’d missed them all so much!!!
Joey dressed as a dog mascot and working for Duke and his father.
Yugi shuts Kaiba the f down!
Mahad makes a brief appearance.
Music to Duel By tracks play in the background and I loved it.
Things that made me confused:
An elevator up to a spaceship. That was literally the only thing I couldn’t suspend my disbelief for.
Why can Kaiba still summon Obelisk? Even Deva questions this. We’re never given an explanation.
Also, the Items are empty. It’s made pretty clear that the Puzzle doesn’t have a spirit in it, so the Ring shouldn’t either. And yet the Ring still manages to corrupt people, even after it’s made pretty clear that the Ring only accepts Ryou as its holder. On the other hand, the Items are traditionally some level of corrupting when held by the wrong people, like the Eye with Pegasus or the Rod with Marik, so maybe that could have just been the Ring being like “hey you’re not the right person, hold still while I completely screw you over.”
Why does the Ring give Deva a makeover? (I actually thought Zorc had somehow returned when possessed!Deva stepped out.
Why is Ryou given a whole new backstory? I mean, I liked it and all, I’m just not sure which part of it was warranted. EDIT: After learning some more stuff from the manga, apparently it’s not a completely new backstory, it’s just new to anime-viewers like myself.
Deva and the rest of his plana crew were unhappy because Shadi was dead, and that’s understandable. They missed the one person who’d ever been kind to them and took care of them and comforted them and kept them safe. Good, touching story. But I have a question: Shadi has been appearing and disappearing as a ghost for the past several years, interacting with the Ishtars and Yugi and Atem and Pegasus and others. But he never could bother to go visit those kids he’d taken care of? Um, excuse me? This whole thing with Deva trying to murder Yugi and co. could have been avoided if you bothered to check up on your kids every one in awhile. Instead, you’re going down with the rest of the YGO parents as “abusive at worst, neglectful at best, and oftentimes dead.”
Things that made me unhappy:
Deva, Mani, and Sera were literally just repeats of the Ishtars. Between them and things like Kaiba holding a colossal tournament so he can “defeat the Pharaoh” and Joey and Ryou being mentally assaulted and sent to another plane of existence, it felt a lot like watching “Battle City” all over again.
Deva constantly compares Ryou and Yugi, and then the narrative constantly compares the Puzzle and the Ring. Each are present and act to balance each other. But, Atem gets to make a couple cameos and Thief Bakura does not. He 100% should have shown up at some point to contrast against Atem. But he doesn’t.
Adding to that last one, just imagine if after Atem brings Joey back to the land of the living, and Yugi and Joey and the others start accosting Deva over the whereabouts of Ryou - a second blinding flash appears. Only this one is made of shadows instead of sunlight, and Ryou is all but thrown on his face back into the land of the living by Thief Bakura. Because “what the f no my reincarnation/host isn’t supposed to be dying wtf?!”
The F where are the Ishtars?! They could have A) prevented Kaiba from digging up the Puzzle in the first place, B) warned/helped Yugi, or C) slapped some sense into Deva.
At no point in the movie does Joey actually get to duel anyone. :-(
Joey also doesn’t see Serenity or any of his close friends in the world Deva constructs for him of his memories. :-<
I wanted Kaiba to enter Atem’s palace and have to pass through Atem’s royal court before reaching him: Priest Seto, Isis, and Shada on one side, Mahad, Mana, and Karim on the other, Siamon stands beside the throne while Thief Bakura casually lounges at the Pharaoh’s feet, and Kisara waves from where she stands in the shadows behind Seto. Goddamnit, I just want them all to be happy.
This sounds like a lot of criticism, and honestly the movie was riddled with plotholes and retconning, but I really truly loved it. It was a fantastic experience that I highly recommend. 12/10, would watch again (if, y’know, there was an invention called the DVD or something, hint hint Konami and 4K *casually sips drink in a bitter fashion*).
- I’ll probably add more to this as I think of them. -

Ok more mokuba serenity friendship stuff! No one asked but me but that’s who this blog is for!
Mokuba and serenity kinda happy that their brothers know about their friendship bc it’s not like they were keeping it secret but they weren’t exactly telling seto/Joey whom they were hanging out with either. Also bc it leads to great moments like “seto if you don’t go help fight yugi’s world domination set villain of the month I’ll tell serenity to tell Joey that you have a blue eyes plushie” and “Joey if you don’t help me clean this goddamn apartment so help me god I will tell mokuba to tell seto about the time you slipped and fell face first into your dinner plate”
Mokuba and serenity going to the mall together and serenity giving him fashion advice bc she’s a well dressed queen and his main fashion inspiration is unfortunately seto and business casual capes don’t really fit the high schooler aesthetic.
But serenity is used to being dirt poor and still has that mindset when she shops but plays it off super well she is the window shopping queen of “omg this is so cute I would commit unspeakable crimes to have this” *puts it back* She doesn’t necessarily resent having to do that but Mokuba “grew up taught that money and power are better than love” Kaiba adds particularly nice things to his mental “potentially buy as a birthday present and lie about the price tag” list.
Serenity is more well adjusted among normal society and kids than Mokuba so she’s definitely the one pretending to not notice that he’s alone in the classroom and no she totally just happened to pop in because she forgot something and “omg Mokuba you left your pencil case too? Anyway we’re going out for karaoke/shopping/boba/food hurry up and find it or you’ll be late!”
Much to Joey and Seto’s chagrin Yugi knew about this friendship wayyyy before they did. He’s seen them out before at malls/cafes/whatever and he’s always been friendly with them so he’ll stop by to say hi and he doesn’t mention it to Joey/kaiba bc he’s #not a narc, plus they actually seem like pretty good friends. Once instead of Yugi it’s atem that shows up and Mokuba’s head is spinning bc there’s something different about him right now and This is the guy that his brother totally does not have a crush on (found out about seto x atem yesterday leaning all the way into it)
Even though their sweet tooth is just the initial way they bond they totally research the cafes with the best cakes and will go to whole different cities just to try one dessert. Seto’s actually really glad mokuba has someone to do this with (bc he’s fs a “can’t eat sweets I need a protein shake” bro) and he can admit it’s nice to see his brother out of his shell. And Joey will never admit it under the pain of torture but he relaxes a bit knowing his baby sister is safe under kaibacorp bodyguards when she goes out bc he’s overprotective and so is seto but with more funds
Idk Joey and Seto not coming to love each other by any means but understanding each other better through their more well adjusted siblings. Never acknowledging it but bonding slightly over the fact that they succeeded, all their struggle so that their siblings could be carefree and laugh and be slightly normal worked and their friendship does in fact prove it. Also both being so overprotective that their siblings chafe against it and serenity-mokuba fs complain about their big bros together and Joey-seto don’t exactly share a commiserating grin but their long suffering eye roll at each other will do.

Ok final Mokuba + Serenity for today bc now I’m thinking about him coming over to the Wheeler’s. I’m headcannoning that Joey and Serenity just have an apartment together once he gets a job and she just lives with him while she does school
Mokuba does Not go to Serenity’s for school stuff it’s just that one day Joey tells her he’s having Yugi, Tea, and Tristan over in the evening and she asks if she can invite Mokuba and for a second he’s like “a Kaiba?? In MY home??” But she’s his sis and Mokuba’s chiller than Seto so he says yes.
So Mokuba randomly gets a text mid-afternoon inviting him over and he lowkey freaks out bc he’s Mokuba Kaiba and he’s never actually been invited to a friend’s place before and what does he do what does he wear and should he bring anything?
He settles on an outfit that she picked for him at the mall once and has their chef pack up pastries to bring over as a host gift bc he is a nice, polite, well mannered boy and Seto raised him Right. And even if his brother has a blind spot of rage for Joey Wheeler, Mokuba does not.
He goes over kinda nervous because he’s never really socially met anyone there except Serenity but Yugi’s the one who opens the door and he’s so earnestly happy to see him that Mokuba feels at ease immediately. If Tristan and Joey were wary at first it’s gone by the time they spot and eat the pastries (the Kaiba’s pastry chef is very good) and Tea never disliked him so she includes him immediately too.
They all just basically play games and Mokuba discovers the world beyond Duel Monsters. He gets really into Just Dance with Serenity and Tea and Joey and Tristan put him onto FIFA (of course they’re fifa bros). They teach him to play Smash and he loses awfully to Serenity playing Kirby (she’s absolutely a Kirby or Princess Peach player) Mokuba changes characters every round before eventually settling on Link. He loses Smash to everyone except Tea who’s admittedly not very good at it.
The night is mostly video games and sodas and pizza delivery and he’s just so happy because he never really envisioned being part of something like this you know? And he thinks he could spend forever on this couch, holding Serenity’s Kuriboh plushie in his lap and laughing with her as Tristan and Joey yell at each other about their Smash game.
He is, however, very much like thirteen or fourteen years old and has had more excitement and sugar in a day than he knows what to do with and eventually crashes on the Wheeler’s couch. Yugi’s planning on sleeping over but by the time Tristan and Tea leave, Serenity’s also conked out on an armchair which leaves Joey in the unfortunate position of having to call Seto on her phone to pick his kid brother up.
Which leads to this wonderful exchange:
Seto, respectfully and amicably: Hello, Serenity?
Joey: no it’s me
Seto, audibly less respectfully and amicably: What do you want, Wheeler
Joey: come get ur kid he’s passed out on my couch cuddling my I mean my sister’s Kuriboh plushie
Seto: damnit fine *hangs up before he can get the address but he’s tracking Mokuba’s location anyway so whatever*
Seto has to stop himself from making barbs about Joey and Serenity’s relatively small apartment (yk, compared to his mansion) mostly because he doesn’t want Serenity to hear. Atem has found some reason to take over Yugi’s body while Joey and Seto wake up their respective siblings.
Serenity and Mokuba are fully leaning all their weight on their big brothers as they all walk to the front door to see Seto and Mokuba out. Mokuba’s really cheerful as he thanks Serenity and Joey for the invite and Seto’s not so subtly eye fucking I mean glaring at Atem and making barbs about how he must’ve been too scared to duel if he spent this whole time playing stupid children’s games on the console (my dear seto duel monsters is also a children’s game but it’s ok I love you still)
But really despite all the barbs at Joey at the end of the day they’re just two dudes rapidly losing the ability to drag their ever growing little siblings’ full weight. And Serenity is sleepily saying bye and trying her hardest to lift her head from Joey’s shoulder and Mokuba has a tired smile on his face as he gets his shoes on and makes no pretense about falling right back asleep on Seto once they’re in the car. And at the end of the day, isn’t this all they’ve ever wanted?
(Also it’s cute to think about Mokuba “kidnapped every other season” Kaiba trusting people other than his brother enough to fall asleep around)

I’m giggling thinking about a mokuba- serenity friendship bc they’re about the same age and we know Seto went to the same high school as yugi + co so it makes sense mokuba might want to go too and joey’s a better parent to serenity than their parents anyway so she might just totally choose to live with him and go to his old high school and just
Mokuba and serenity are in the same homeroom. He knows who she is because seto provided him with files on his entire class before he started and looked disapprovingly at the last name Wheeler and she knows who he is bc his brother is famous and she’s heard her brother rant about seto so many times.
So mokuba’s prepared for “a poor, naive, loudmouth idiot” (seto’s words) and serenity’s mentally preparing to go head to head with “an obnoxious rich freak who’s in love with his cards” (joey’s words) but tbh they’re both shyer and quieter than their brothers and are pleasantly surprised to find each other to be fairly reserved but sweet nevertheless.
And they both work in the library after school bc going home to Joey is distracting and loud and Mokuba wants to do his work away from his brother who cares too much about his grades (bc let’s face it boy-genius seto would have to actively try to not be a tiger mom but there’s a learning curve) and the humdrum of the business and the various people that are always visiting. And they both sit at the only empty table (hahah my platonic school au version of only one bed) and work in pleasant silence.
And idk maybe they’re paired together for a project and find that they have so much in common (cough cough older brothers who parent them but are also unhealthily obsessed with yugi and duel monsters) and end up regaling each other with their stories. And they find out that they both have a sweet tooth and end up going out for cake, which is how their friendship goes from project partners to people who actually hang out and text and send each other memes.
Seto and Joey only find out about this friendship bc of said project bc of course they’re determined to be Good-Parents-I-Mean-Big-Brothers so they take an interest in stuff their siblings complete and are proud of and see “by: Serenity Wheeler and Mokuba Kaiba” in her beautiful calligraphy. And they both go a little insane bc “How could you work with HIM/HER you know how I feel about KAIBA/WHEELER you’ve BETRAYED me” but eventually both of them grudgingly accept this friendship bc really they’d do anything to make their kid sibling happy and that includes slightly accepting each other (also the project is like. Really good)

Yugioh S4 Ep7: Mai Gets a Day Job (Killing People For Sport)
So, I looked at the calendar and realized, if  I don’t get this post up this week then you’ll only have one update from me for the whole of November since I’m leaving for over a week again. :/ So I’m just gonna get right to the good stuff because it has taken just a crazy amount of time to get to episode 7.  How great would it be if I also got to episode 8. Real great, right?
So lets do this, I can do this, I can write a recap without getting insanely distracted, watch me do it: This episode starts with Tristan sticking to the fatal flaw of his character sheet and seeing listed at the very top “low key toilet obsession.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah Tristan.
And when you think “well, OK, they’re stuck by some historic Mesas, this is fine,” suddenly they are beset by the world’s most random biker gang of like 20 full grown adults/biker assassins.
Tumblr media
And it’s not super clear if their driver died out there in the Arizona desert, or if he just put on a different outfit and joined this gang, but it won’t matter because like...it’s a filler arc in Yugioh so there’s gonna be some deaths.
Tumblr media
This season seems to change genre like every 10 minutes, and so for right now we are in a Mad Max post-apocalyptic territory and PS every one of these bikers uses a lead pipe?
Tumblr media
I feel like this is way more violent than a gun???
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, out the horizon comes another biker, like a masked cowboy on horseback, except she shoots these things instead of bullets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are trained assassins, by the way, just completely incapacitated by paper.
I just love the marketing team working alongside of this show that’s like “and what else can Yugioh cards do? destroy biker gangs. That’s right, one single card will absolutely destroy a biker!” and the writing staff was like “yeah, we can work that in. That totally works in universe, you don't even know.”
Tumblr media
It’s Mai! Back from murdering the hell out of Pegasus, I guess she decided to ninja these 20 bikers, and did it so devastatingly, that they somehow blew up a motorcycle next to a live fuel tank? Like we’re talking Oliver Queen precision throwing here and like...
...Mai’s only been gone like a year right???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, seeing that this card is a harpy, which I dunno...doesn’t seem like it’s all that rare in comparison to a Blue Eyes or a God Card or I dunno any of the other signature cards we’ve heard about, Joey immediately recognizes Mai. Despite the fact that everything she is doing right now is completely out of character, and despite the fact that they are in freakin California.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RIP to all 20 of the people in that gang of bikers, because no one followed this limo away from the scene--everyone was, I assume, hella dead.
Youknow, I never expected Mai to kill more people than Bakura. I would have predicted Joey before Mai. I would have predicted Rebecca before Mai. Literally anyone else on this show before Mai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seto, crawling out of this oversized castle that I guess...is back on the real estate market now...decides that the irresistible pull of dragons printed on paper cards is stronger than listening to his brother’s needs to put down the damn cards and make a contractually obligated theme park.
Tumblr media
I mean Mokuba kept him off the cards for nearly a whole year. What a healthy year that was for Seto.
Tumblr media
Back in Arizona, apparently they didn’t make it more than a mile before Tristan busted the car. Not really clear why or how this happened, but they’ve decided to argue with eachother about it despite the fact one of them is clearly magical and does not really need to eat or drink or even maybe sleep?
Like we’ve seen Bakura basically survive off of one plate of tacos and 2 pints of blood, so just make Pharaoh push the car all the way back to California. Or just make Pharaoh use his millennium AIM to call up His tomb keepers and be like “Marik, we need a lift.” or maybe summon a very real monster because that’s a thing now?
Course this would rely on Pharaoh remembering that he has superpowers, which, somehow after 4 seasons, he always forgets how to use the moment he uses them. It’s like reverse Sailor Moon--Usagi tends to level up her Super powers, Pharaoh kind of tosses them out of the window and goes “oops” and becomes more and more mortal every single season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So instead of magic they will just use Tea.
Tumblr media
Amazing how none of them are really willing to date Tea seriously but they will acknowledge, out of the four of them, Tea is the best looking. So their strategy, bear with me, wasn’t to use the fact they’re children to get help from adults driving by, instead, the boys hid behind a rock so they could really make sure they were getting a hella pervy truck driver that would only stop for a single teenage girl stuck in the desert.
Only this group of kids would be like “Hey lets make sure the guy who picks us up is statistically most likely to be a serial killer” and then, weirdly enough, this horndog pedo truck driver ended up being the only person who didn’t try to kill them this entire episode.
Tumblr media
So, lets go back to SF but coming from the north side...which makes no sense...but then again, they put Mesas in Napa County.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So last episode I assumed Rex and Weevil were dropped off in Oakland, but Rex informs us this episode that they are in “the worst part of town”
Where they get robbed twice, only to be saved by Duke Devlin, who I guess just lives here now because maybe it’s the only place he can afford in this expensive as hell city? Maybe he isn’t bothered by the crime-rate after that week he spent on Kaiba’s blimp/Seaquest mmo adventure?
Anyway, for some reason Duke--who is a game shop owner/developer by day--is wandering around the Tenderloin as a vigilante and saving people by throwing dice at them as some sort of side hustle and this is never discussed at all.
I would watch that spinoff series. Religiously.
Tumblr media
Fun fact, there is definitely sketchy and bad parts of the Tenderloin you will know not to go to (you can smell it actually), but like a third of it is part of the best shopping district in the city and we used to just shop there unsupervised when I was a kid. It has an Anthropologie.
Not saying the parts that are bad aren’t bad. Whenever I drive through the non-shopping parts, I see at least one super sketch thing making me thankful I’m in the car. But I just don't know how Rex and Weevil managed to get robbed twice in one day. Just go five blocks in literally any direction.
Tumblr media
Bro and I were like...HOW did this shot happened from this angle on the freeway...and then I only just now realized it. Something I forgot about because it’s from my parent’s generation...maybe the animators weren’t aware that the Embarcadero fell down after Loma Prieta?
Tumblr media
So this was the SF landscape before the quake of 89′ (Which I have no memory of since I was a baby when this happened)
and after 89.
Tumblr media
Like maybe the animators they had on this team remembered an SF from their youth that had a huge iconic raised street wrapping all the way around one part of it and just...never got the memo that an Earthquake made the entire thing fall down?
Either way, Duke is either driving these two directly out of SF, or he is driving them into 1988 and is taking a lovely drive on the Old Embarcadero, an experience which does not exist anymore, and which makes a lot more sense since Duke has to be somewhat near downtown, going by the skyscrapers and the vicinity to the Tenderloin.
Man. In the Yugioh Universe, Loma Preita just never actually happened. How is that factoid alone not the weirdest part of this episode?
Tumblr media
(I am so glad Serenity is not here now that Duke’s back)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome back to the show Duke, glad you’re bringing...Rex and Weevil...
To be fair, Duke has absolutely no idea who is and isn’t Yugi’s friends. Duke just kind of shows up and pretends like he’s part of the gang, and the gang has lost so much brain matter from all the cards and all the dark magic, they just assume he’s been here the whole time.
Tumblr media
So at first I was like “this has to be a pun on Industrial Light and Magic” since there’s virtually no other film studios in the city--but ILM moved to SF 3-4 years after this season came out. So it’s just a weird coincidence, I guess. Or maybe it’s just a really uninspired name?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so Mai, who I guess has been just waiting on this ledge for 8 hours decides to drop in.
Tumblr media
Mai has evolved a lot since S1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, although Mai is just...straight up evil now, at least we get to see it taken out on Pegasus who, as far as this show is concerned, is a pretty evil bastard.
A pretty evil bastard who took like 3-4 episodes to beat in S1 but Mai could just do it off-screen.
Tumblr media
It’s just funny that the entire time on the island Pegasus was probably pretty sure everyone there was trying to kill him EXCEPT for Mai and then the moment his back is turned he’s like “oh whaaaat?”
Like Bandit Keith is already in America. But rather than use Bandit Keith for this, lets use Mai to give Joey something to angst about. We can’t put her in a coma again--so lets instead get her vaguely possessed. Although seriously, if someone I liked did this to me I think I’d be over that crush really fast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, speaking of Bandit Keith, we get to have a Greek Chorus this duel from the minibosses. Valon and the other guy with the handlebar-muttonchops.
Tumblr media
I looked up “where does Valon’s accent come from” and literally there is no consensus, as far as I know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s where this episode ends.
Now I’m gonna go out of town for a week and then will need another week to make more of these so I’ll be on another hiatus. Holding out if I’ll maybe bring a laptop or something to where I’m going so I can type out recaps when I’m bored.
The problem is having the uhhhhh photoshop to do the caps. I can’t bear to do this in MS Paint because hell will freeze over before I lose all of my actions and hotkeys I made specifically to reduce the time it takes to make these. But we shall see.
anyway, if you want to see these from the beginning, click here.

Yugioh S4 E3: So Many Dragons in This One
Y’all so I’m like getting over a pretty nasty cold that’s pretty much wiped me clean like a hard reset and this episode coinciding with it is something else because this episode is essentially a fever dream start to finish.
First off:
Tumblr media
If your mind didn’t immediately start playing ska-like alt rock and go through every lyric from “Escape From the City” then I can’t help you. Because that’s where my mind directly went and stayed for the entirety of this episode.
Back in the museum, Yugi learns about some more crypto-history.
Because Y’all, Yugioh just LOVES to screw with history. I mean we’ve already seen what they did to Seto Kaiba’s timeline, but get a load of what they’re about to do with world history.
Tumblr media
(Arthur now has the USA gradient because I was at a loss of how else to describe Arthur. If Bandit Keith comes back then I’ll be mixing fonts, yet again.)
This was done mostly to recap the last 3 seasons, but also to drop in some brand new lore that came out of freakin nowhere.
Tumblr media
Atlantis.
Yes, he said Atlantis.
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media
In the actual dialogue of the show, Tea mentions she read a single book about Atlantis once in her life, and then Joey and Tristan go “Tea, you nerd!” and it’s like wow the standards are low in this group. One single book, boys? That’s all it takes to be a nerd? When you have any of the KAIBAS right over there? One single book is the requirement?
Starting to think no one in this universe knows what a nerd is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the underwater cave dwelling from a few episodes back is none other than the Atlantis ruins. I feel like this should be a way bigger deal in terms of like all of history, since in this universe, Atlantis is time wise at the dawn of (checks wikipedia)...proto-writing...and yet they seem to really have their math and large construction science down.
Tumblr media
The arch wasn’t really utilized (I hesitate to say “discovered” as it is an arch) until about 2000 BC or so. Good on the Atlanteans, I guess?
Don’t know why we’re getting so sidetracked by cards when a civilization 10000 years ago could make immense underwater 60 ft castles that don’t immediately collapse under the pressure, but this is the Yugioh universe and everyone’s card addiction runs strong and true.
Tumblr media
It just seems funny to me that Hawkins, who devoted I want to say like 60 years of his life toward becoming a walking encyclopedia about Egypt, got super sidetracked and ended up 10000 leagues under the sea in Atlantis. He just threw all that Egypt work completely to the wind and basically changed his career at age I dunno 70 or so. Or maybe this guy is only 50 but he just seems super way old to me.
(And raising his granddaughter for some reason? Hell knows what happened to Rebecca’s parents, but knowing Yugioh, it will probably be really, really tragic.)
So then, although Atlantis is in our world and under the sea, Hawkins decides to throw another fast one on us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I just chose a random number, but Buzzfeed decided Washington was 34th. Which is wild.)
Bro took this moment to explain to me in great and excruciating detail that the Atlanteans in Aquaman did in fact invent tanks. Aquaman is his favorite. Ya, I know.
Tumblr media
So I thought “ah, this is the Shadow Realm” (since we have seen Bakura just make a monster a real boy before) but then it became kind of unclear if the Shadow Realm is a different realm than this other realm which is just where the nice monsters live. So um...I’m still not sure about that one, I’ll get back to you when it’s made clear (I may never get back to you on that one)
Tumblr media
Then Rebecca decides to drop this lore about the ghost that lives in Yugi Muto’s head that we’ve been *pretty Sure* up to this point was strictly Egyptian dealing with strictly Egyptian things.
Tumblr media
I am not entirely sure how we’re going to take a guy who lived 5000 years ago and explain why he’s living now in AD 2002 Yugi Muto’s head because of some guy 10000 years ago. But they’re going to try.
Like I’ve heard this referred to as a filler season, because it uh did not happen in the Manga. So, legally, they can’t really touch the manga at all (and I assume they were probably waiting for the manga to finish at this point), and so we’re just gonna...pull Atlantis out of nowhere because the nice thing about Atlantis is that it is so freakin old that it is well outside of copyright. Completely fair use. But it’s still kinda wild.
Also, Yugi made sure to off-handedly tell us that most of the monsters who’ve invaded their world have been very, very, nice, and that’s why everyone has been so chill.
Tumblr media
I mean. OK?
You still have literal dragons flying around but apparently only some of the dragons are mean and attack, the rest just chill and float around like a fish or something. Personally, I wouldn’t be thrilled by this.
Hawkins notices Yugi’s enchanted dead guy necklace, and without asking “so...does this belong to a dead guy? Did you get this from the dead guy’s corpse? Yugi? Yugi, look at me. Yugi, young man, is this another dead guy necklace you’ve been carrying around in your pocket because I feel like I see a problem here, buster.”
Hawkins suggests, instead:
Tumblr media
Oh OK...that’s a lot to take in.
Didn’t expect giant possessed lady statues but it’s a nice spooky touch. Can’t have enough giant possessed lady statues in your anime, honestly.
Also, I’m really glad they gave this skinny lady statue a double chin.
And after all that, Hawkins decides he’s done with his one single afternoon in Japan, and he’s going to go and travel 16 hours back to the US stuck in a plane within hearing distance of Rebecca. Worth that 32 hour round trip for that one afternoon in Japan (or actually one way is 4 hours longer than the other way or something? I forget the details.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like the show had him blush and then Tea got mad, but like Yugi also blushed when Mai gave him a note once that said “thanks for the help!” so I feel like Yugi just shuts down completely whenever he has to deal with girls.
Maybe this is just the face Yugi makes when he quickly enters the pyramid zone and is like “Pharaoh, it’s getting mad weird out there!” And Pharaoh’s just sitting on his throne eating cheese whiz straight out of a can in star pj’s with matching bootspants and he’s like “My Gods, Yugi! If I’m here, and you’re here, who’s driving the plane!?” and then they just start shrugging at eachother about who has to go on the date this time until Yugi snaps out of it.
Tumblr media
ah, a disembodied voice.
Literally thought it was my own voice.
It keeps Yugi up for a while, but when has Yugi ever fallen asleep right away on this show?
Tumblr media
After Yugi calms down enough to go the hell to bed, we zoom back to our Xtreme sports boys who have finally decided to stop Tony Hawking all over this island long enough to deliver the sober news that Gurimo is freakin dead.
Tumblr media
Which they barely brought up at all because who freakin cares about Gurimo? This guy sure didn’t.
Tumblr media
Cool. Good plan.
Hard to rebuild civilization without people. Just throwing that out there.
But ya. Lets go end mankind on Episode 3. Thought it would take a little bit longer for him to get enough soul juice but apparently he’s good on the soul juice from these three juicy cards that have no souls (I thought).
3 God Cards + 1 Gurimo - 1 Rex - 1 Weevil = Destroy Humanity
First, a dream sequence.
Tumblr media
This is one bizarre ass dream sequence and like...I don’t even know if I have much to say because it’s like...so out of left field and both out of the lore of this show and just barely inside the lore enough for it to work.
Still feels hella out of nowhere though.
That may be just the Dayquil talking.
Either way, we get to have Yugi run around in pjs again, but unfortunately they have no stars so I just don’t freakin care when see it. I get that stars are hard to animate and he’s a year older and maybe grew out of the star pj’s but c’mon. We had a good thing going, show.
But they hear a voice within the pyramid, and I’m using Tea’s font color here but it’s not Tea, it’s another girl who is...a lot like Tea honestly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So up to this point we’ve accepted that the puzzle is all of Pharaoh’s mysteries and also mixed with the memories of Yugi as well. We have a room of short term memory (that pharaoh never uses) full of little clones of Yugi’s friends. We have a room full of all the lego pieces that Yugi lost over his young life (and 2 very cursed tamagachis.) We have a room that has a gigantic guardian Dark Magician who almost killed Shadi once. We also have several rooms that are just traps that can basically kill you, or if you are Shadi, just totally set you on fire, because screw Shadi.
Also it has this room:
Tumblr media
But we find a new room that is like an entire fantasy realm and it’s like...so what memory is this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhat confusing if you’re me and you’ve assumed up to this point that everything in the puzzle has something to do with Pharaoh’s past. Apparently there’s just a door to another world in here they just never knew was here.
Just this entire time Yugi and Pharaoh were completely unaware that they had a DOOR TO ANOTHER WORLD in their necklace. Which, as I mentioned before, is where all the duel monsters live, but looks nothing like the Shadow Realm, which we’ve seen before.
Tumblr media
And like honestly I kinda just figured at first that the giant eye was supposed to be there eating dragons, as if this was some sort of cycle of life for the duel monsters, to be a dragon, grow old, and then get devoured by the eyeball in the sky to start over again as nutrients to feed the baby dragons.
But in fact the eye is Not Normal and we should be alarmed by it.
Very hard to know what should and should not be normal when I’ve never seen this place before, also it has three crystal dragons that I guess the other monsters MUST be worshiping or something because check out the purple tile palace they made just for these crystal dragons.
Tumblr media
Like this made me ask a LOT of questions about the civilization of duel monsters. Like who made this? Did a bunch of Kuriboh make this? Hell does this civilization works and is it a monarchy and are there castes?
Do they do taxes?
And then we meet her, the voice asking for our help, it’s this girl. Dark Magician girl. Nice to finally meet you. Wish it had a little more build up and made more sense.
We’ve talked to this chick before. She was digital at the time, but she kind of pretends that she already knows Pharaoh and Yugi and they kinda just...take this as it comes. I mean there wasn’t much time to deliver this dialogue so they were like, if the lady in the cornucopia hat says so, I guess we have to do the thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is nice that we do finally get an explanation for why Pegasus could make all these cards but could not resurrect his dead wife--being that she is...not from this world.
Tumblr media
But like now the puzzle not only dives into Pharaoh’s past but is also just a straight up a dimension portal. You can just...visit these people whenever? I guess?
I was getting used to the puzzle being a very large metaphor, and I wasn’t actually prepared for it to have a utilitarian use like a Stargate. This asks a lot of questions, but put those questions aside because we have to adopt this dragon by pulling a huge ass sword out of it’s right eyeball.
This show is SO mean to eyeballs.
She explains that there was some lore that lead to this sword being plunged into this buddy’s eye over here but I forgot it already. It was like half a sentence and then it was gone and I’m on Dayquil and I’m sure it’ll come back. At some point they’ll bring it all full circle, I’m sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like if this happened in a dream then does this place even exist on a mortal plane at all? Can it only be accessed through dreams and being dead? It’s kind of a fascinating concept since these duel monsters have to be summoned through paper, which has all sorts of relevant meaning in a lot of Eastern mythologies.
Stuff I’ll never know because say goodbye to the Duel Monster Land that Apparently-Exists-Now-And-Absolutely-Always-Existed,-Stop-Thinking-About-Who-Invented-Tanks,-It-Was-Obviously-The-Atlanteans-10000-Years-Ago, we’re gonna go and take this huge ass dragon we have no business inheriting but are anyway because the dumbass ghost in our brain has this grand reputation that he banished some sort of evil 5000 years ago but has absolutely no memory of how the hell he did that or what even occurred, and because of his completely wiped bean, this makes him a complete idiot at best and a complete psychopath at his absolute worst.
But yeah, lets take this dragon and see what happens.
You gotta bring furniture, but the dragon is free. 2 bedrooms, no rugs, it’s free.
Tumblr media
I just realized we got a dragon and not the sword. Only in this anime.
Tumblr media
And then he wakes up to the last thing I expected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was nice of Yugi to take the time it took for him to get entirely dressed and ready, but I guess if the world has to end you gotta go out in style. Which for him means his school uniform because, although Yugi absolutely hates this school for some reason, he has a lot of pride for it. Just a crazy amount of school pride for how rarely he attends school and for the lengths he went to get out of soccer practice that one time. But will Yugi be caught dead in anything but his school colors? No.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HOW IS THIS CITY STILL STANDING.
Also Kaiba must be having a wild time on the top of Kaiba Tower but maybe he took a helicopter a while back to go on a world dragon tour because we didn’t hear a peep out of him this entire very Very VERY dragon-centric episode.
Really weird how many dragons there are with so few Kaibas. It’s like the moment they turned around, every dragon on Earth came out of hiding to throw a huge ass dragon party.
PS get a load of this dragon.
Tumblr media
Why would you ever give a dragon an ass?
I don’t even know how this is possible because it doesn’t have a butt crack, but it’s got serious ass going on. It’s the Lizzo of dragons, when you set it to defense mode, it probs just twerks to intimidate the other side.
Tumblr media
(Yugi’s friends are so freakin patient OMG)
Also how the hell can Yugi play this card on his duel disk if neither Kaiba or Pegasus have any idea this card exists? Magic, I guess? The duel disk is part magic?
Not like it matters much, we know from Bakura that you don’t need a duel disk to make real boy cards if you have a millennium item anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So at this point I’m like...I think I watched the last episode of the season, I think it’s...out of order and bro was like “nope...it’s Episode 3. We’re still on Episode 3.”
Tumblr media
And so after that it closed the...dimension joining portal, which was a Golden Compass style aurora borealis, then Dark Magician Girl returned to her home planet.
...Which is also dangling around Yugi’s neck.
Tumblr media
This was a lot.
I have a lot of questions.
Everyone in domino SHOULD have a lot of questions but I think they all went back to bed.
A tornado with a GLOWING EYE tried to destroy their city, and they just rolled over and went back to bed.
This season sure takes off really quickly holy crap.
Now fair warning, because I’ve been hella sick the next recap is uhh...a huge mess so it will probably be a week or so before I post it/even get to it. At some point I started numbering them completely wrong and I either saved 10 caps to a different folder or I never made them in the first place and I honestly am not entirely sure. Last week is kind of a blur and it’s a mess on my desktop right now, so my pacing is gonna reflect that because I am...behind...on everything.
Oh dude and actually now that I look at what date it freakin is, I have to go to one of my best friends weddings real soon so can we just say...it might be a few weeks before I can steadily update again? I have to learn a whole dance routine for this giant wedding and y’all, I am not a dancer. And, while my friends have had dance classes since they were like 5, I’m like...low key extremely certain I will fall completely on my ass. Anyway, there is no way out of this situation I thought would never actually happen, and thought was just a funny idea they invented when they got drunk at the bachelorette, but nah, they remembered, and this is really happening but the bride will think it’s funny so here we go.
PS this dance is to the only existing mashup of Bollywood and N*syncs Bye Bye Bye (which, yes, it is a breakup song) I hope you feel the second hand embarrassment through your computer, I am dancing for 300+ people. Directly following the groom’s parent’s dance, which is 10 minutes long, and for which they hired a professional choreographer. We are the only dance out of four epically spectacular dances that is from the bride’s side, and our dance is...2 minutes and the equivalent of a high school lipsync.
TBH I'm low key excited to do it because potentially it could be a really great story depending on the reaction of what happens.
Anyway, so if I disappear for a while only to post fanart I’ve drawn out of stress, that is what I’ve been doing in the background. I’ve just been trying to remember how to do the Bye Bye Bye dance correctly for 2 straight weeks while feverishly trying to catch up with all my other work.
Also, because I mentioned George Washington, I had to go and find the horny grandma clip from Gilmore Girls and I’m so glad that two people on the internet managed to clip it, and I can’t believe the only two people who’ve clipped this did it with their phones. In fact, kudos to this youtuber for videoing a Tablet with his phone, because there’s no better way to watch a show from the 00′s than to make you feel really illegal about it.

Yugioh S3 Ep 31: Joey’s Dead (Again)
Ah, it is 5 billion degrees and working has been pretty much impossible, so, lets turn on Netflix and...
Tumblr media
Thanks, Netflix.
Anyways, time to go see Joey get destroyed by a bird. On screen. This traumatic as hell kid’s show.
Tumblr media
Now, usually this kid’s show is very...kid’s show in quality. The animation has exactly what it needs for most children and teens to feel satisfied--and that’s absolutely fine. You don’t have to make everything look like My Hero Academia, youknow? They were not looking for an award.
But this episode, the one where Joey freakin dies, they decided to bring out their A team. This is the best looking episode of Yugioh that I’ve seen so far, and it was freakin shocking how much better the quality was. Like, I dunno what weird blood sacrifice they did to make this episode looks so freakin good, but kudos to them, everything is more fluid, the shots are composed in a really interesting way, and for once, they actually spend the time to let these characters...react to stuff.
The big twist in Yugioh, at least for me, is when it randomly decides to be quality. It doesn’t happen all (most of) the time, but occasionally, Yugioh will just take a quality swing at me and it’s like “the hell was THAT?” Not that this episode is the best animated episode of anything ever made, it still doesn’t hold a candle to shows that are made in order to be beautiful--but for Yugioh, who’s purpose was never to be pretty (point of fact, Bakura’s hair) and who’s main purpose is to sell freakin playing cards...this is a damn pretty episode.
They just loved Joey that much I guess.
Anyway, onward for what is also the most melodramatic episode of Yugioh I’ve seen. This episode is kind of a gem. I cannot believe I just watched an episode on this show about cards where 3/4 of it was just so many boys full on ugly sobbing into their friend’s comatose body.
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media
Serenity, this small dot in the next cap here, has only made it to.....this part of the island. She has to now run up like 2 miles of tower. Just remember this fact for later.
Tumblr media
Yo so...this is a stupid adult question but like who is paying for the healthcare on all these kids in this tourney? Is it just Kaiba? Is Kaiba footing the bill? I mean, it’s a kid’s show so we’ll pretend that hospitals are free (and in Japan it’s like Universal but kinda inbetween, so I’ve heard, so this would be less of a deal) but as an adult American every time they’re in a hospital scene I’m just imagining how crazy that GoFundMe campaign page would look like.
But, as Serenity starts climbing up this monalith, on the roof of said tower, Joey is at max anime. For the first time ever, his hair is drawn as like separate hairs and not as just some weird backwards anteater tail he wears on his head. And youknow what? Joey has a hellton of hair. Your hair has to be realllly long and full to do an anteater and I don’t give him enough credit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so after all that, Joey’s like...still up.
Tumblr media
(I mean this is as far as I know, I don’t have Jump Force)
Remember how Yugi stood in front of one single fireball so that Joey wouldn’t take one for Mai? Now that we’ve seen how Joey was still standing after bird fire tornado--he...probably would’ve been fine with the fireball. Just conjecture, but I feel like Joey, despite not having any connection to a millennium item, is some sort of escaped X-men.
And then, like everyone on this show is wont to do, he just randomly hallucinates Yugi. What’s great about this episode is that Joey will hallucinate Yugi not once, but twice. (which will come later)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, this “Oh yeaaaaaahhhhh” was a super fluid animation that I might just lift because it was so freakin wild. Like it was kind of terrifying how fluid it was. In anime they tend to freelance out different clips to different animators, so they aren’t really all working in the same studio (which is why often anime will have reallllly nice animation in some parts, and then less in others, while in US studios where everyone works on everything, there’s less of that) But whoever got the Joey saying “Oh yeaaaaaaahhhh” scene must’ve been like “this is it, this is my big break” and spent like half a day making it as fluid as they could compared to everything else going on.
Tumblr media
They also had enough time for Yugi to partially disrobe for some reason. I guess it looked cool.
Tumblr media
Please contrast the twinkly lights and the shimmer sound effect with what follows it:
Tumblr media
It’s at this point that Seto Kaiba actually starts to doubt this whole tourney, but not for the reason a normal person would doubt a tourney that has had several apocalypses and mass-murderers involved in it.
Tumblr media
Kaiba was Extremely Upset about this revelation.
Anyway, Since Joey is still standing, he pulls a card, realizes it can kill Marik, slaps it on the duel disk, the monster shows up on the field, and--Kaiba either has the fastest elevator in the world, or Serenity runs a 3 minute mile because, guess who made it to the top of this tower of Babel?
That’s right, supportive Sister, here to walk Joey through the hard arduous task of basically pressing “enter” on your keyboard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RIP again, Joey, RIP again. I mean it’s hard to get too wrapped up in it because I know he already died...this morning...like two hours ago. Like basically he got turned into stone for a bit, and then after coming back to life, took a nap on the blimpjet and then arrived at this island to die yet again. Joey Wheeler has just had such a very intense couple of days and desperately needs a nap.
But, game wise, Joey played a monster, it was on the field--what else would he have done with it???
But because he didn’t say a word loud enough for other people to hear, this didn’t count???
This game is so weird about what rules it decides are binding and which are loosey goosey. There’s absolutely no time limit, you can strap the other person to a weird wall device and throw fireballs at their face, you can sap their life energy with weird fiber optic cables, but if you don’t say the word “Attack” although the monster card is in Attack position--it doesn’t count? There’s nothing else on the field to hit but Marik himself. There’s literally nothing else Joey would have done with that card. He totally won this match but whatever, it’s Yugioh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lets give it up for the one and only adult in the room, everybody. Good Job, Roland. Good freakin job.
I get that he’s a butler/pilot/card referee/bodyguard, but who else is freakin there to parent any of these teens? Ishizu? Is that all we have left?
Sorry, I’ve thought more about Roland and his mysterious dodgy character than the people who made this show.
Anyway, it’s at this point that Mokuba decided to climb stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, this episode has so many weird animation details that say a lot about the characters--and I’m just not used to this much love and care.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So another wild thing about this episode--I didn’t realize that Joey was even Shadow Realmed when I watched it through. This episode is super vague when it comes to Joey. Everyone is mourning as if he had died, and so for me, the first time watcher (as well as my Bro who saw it once when he was 13), I just assumed this is because they finally got a completely different but very good animation team on this episode. I just figured this was someone high up saying “maybe you should have the characters realistically react to at least a single death on this show where 183 people have died”
But, turns out this is actually a translation error. Because, in the Japanese version, Joey just freakin stopped breathing or something? In the English version that we’re watching, Joey is just in a coma, and it’s a rather pleasant coma (yet still my definition of a death). But, the reason everyone is reacting like...how they should have reacted the previous 182 times, is because Joey was actually legally dead.
Something they censored out to keep the show mystifyingly Y-7 although...I think I’ve said this a million times, but don’t give this show to your 7 year old. Going off of what my Nephews and Nieces like, Yugioh is a pretty far cry from PJ Masks and Monster High.
Anyway, the show goes totally all out, and everyone does a 150% more than what is ever necessary grief cry, and I think the best cry goes to Tristan although Yugi attempted really hard to steal the gold. Thing about Yugi’s grieving is that he was going more for quantity over quality, but they did a really brutal close zoom on Tristan going through the stages of Grief (mostly anger) and it was like...unexpected for a Yugioh episode y’all. I’ve never seen Tristan go that hard...ever. Tristan is usually kind of tertiary but he just came out of nowhere to scream directly at my face and I was not expecting it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this episode does something that I like, although it was kind of unusual for Pharaoh and Yugi--and it shows us how they react in a completely opposite way to the same traumatic event. They’ll both get around to crying but Pharaoh will take his time.
Also, we’ve seen indication of Pharaoh’s inward grief before - and it’s something they usually say but don’t show - but this is the first time they’ve actually showed that Pharaoh tends to bottle everything deep, deep down. He’s got maybe a lot of feelings about being a ghost who doesn’t have a body or a history or...anything, and him bottling up Yugi (since Yugi isn’t going to come out for the rest of this episode) is sort of a proof that he’s used to bottling everything.
Cuz outwardly, he’s just like this (and kudos to the art team for leaving a spot where Yugi’s spirit is currently crying over the corpse/coma victim)
Tumblr media
And then meanwhile, Kaiba just has no idea what planet he’s even on. Remember that in the Japanese version, Joey freakin died in Seto’s own tournament. This would be a PR disaster, but does Kaiba...know?
Tumblr media
(Yes, I keep a draft file that is just every single death so I can keep track of them, and this is the 4th time that Joey has died)
Then this doctor shows up, which is surprising, because I figured Marik knocked this guy out and stuffed him in a broom closet last season. But nah, it’s the same doctor, he’s back. This poor doctor who keeps having to tend Shadow Realm patients while every single person on this blimp is in the same little hospital room with him, just breathing down his neck.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, if this doctor has been here this entire time, then why did Serenity just stay directly by Mai’s side?
They have a doctor.
Anyway, originally I thought I’d make this two parts but like...nah, we’ll just have a really long post.
Lets see how Joey’s Shadow Realm is (which, again, it is super unclear if he is or isn’t, and from when I polled you guys it looked like it was sort of like a “don’t think about it” situation of whether this is a dream of Joey’s, or the Shadow Verse)
I’ve made the joke before that you can tell it’s a dream when they’re at school but...we’re back at school. It’s the only time we see Joey in his school uniform.
Tumblr media
Thirsty preteens rejoice, they finally removed Joey from his baggy pajama shirt that he’s been stuck in for 2 seasons. Like, do you think when Kaiba was looking at public schools, he saw that this school had not only crazy card people, but also freakin nuts shoulder pads and he just slammed that “enroll” button?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So...does Yugi KNOW that everyone else dreams about him on a regular basis? Like, does he KNOW? I figure Yugi just has sort of a weird tick related to the puzzle that makes it so people are seeing him, but Yugi has no idea that he’s got an inception method ability, right?
And especially since this is kind of a magic-onset dream, and Yugi really wants to save Joey, it sort of almost looks like Yugi is doing this maybe latently through the puzzle? But...probably not. I don’t really know what’s happening here, other than Joey’s just gonna go peace out and play this confusing card game for eternity.
That would be my Shadow Realm.
Tumblr media
Back at our homeslice, Blimpjet, Seto has sent his little brother to deliver all of the bad news for him, knowing that Mokuba is too cute for anyone to do anything about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so Mokuba decides to radio a helicopter to save him because he’s a Kaiba and doesn’t realize that planes/boats exist. Good to see that Mokuba has finally decided to embrace his job as Battle City Commissioner and figure out a solution to transporting/hiding all these bodies.
Honestly, I’m just shook that this blimpjet is not a blimpjetboat.
Tumblr media
Bro told me that in the Japanese version, Tristan just straight up punches Joey right near this scene, and like...that’s probably true. Bro has a lot of spicy headcanons but I can see this show doing that. (bro note: that might have been an earlier Joey coma).
Knowing that, it makes this kind of more funny because Yugi is so absorbed in The Crying that I guess he didn’t notice that whole thing go down with Tristan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess they wanted a throwback to S1, but this episode is so extra that Yugi very nearly stops playing cards. Nearly. He’s still gonna play cards, but I guess as a symbol to show that he’s starting to give into just not playing this game anymore, Pharaoh actually takes this weird contraption off his arm.
To do so he has to like remove the battery or something. I didn't even realize what he was doing because it was so un-intuitive, but you have to pull out this 4 inch battery from the back in order to remove the disk.
Can you imagine!???? Can you imagine wearing this thing in real life and shoving a 4 inch 2 lb battery in and out of this hulking thing every time you had to use the toilet?
Which...I guess they haven’t been, right? Like I shouldn’t go down that avenue but like...they haven’t been, right? There are just so many germs on this disk.
Tumblr media
And so Pharaoh decides it’s finally time to lose it, maybe because Yugi wants to give up cards, or maybe because there’s no one else around so it’s finally fine for him to shed a masculine tear or two, but it took him I want to say like 20 more minutes than Yugi to finally react to all this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then this happens?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, remember Ishizu’s Millennium Necklace (not to be confused with the Millennium Puzzle with is also a Necklace, which Yugi also has, but he only wears one, because he just doesn’t feel like wearing 2 chokers at once, I guess)
Apparently the reason that Yugi was given the necklace was to get this one vision of the future. Get ready for it, the entire fate of the world rested on Pharaoh getting this one vision.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, the answer was indeed, cards.
Tumblr media
On the other end of the blimpjet, Mokuba I guess got tired of Roland’s poor radio skills and has decided to use the radio himself while Roland kind of just stands there and waves his arms around.
Tumblr media
Straight up, does Mokuba have a Ham license? Are the Kaiba’s Hams? So like, Bro and I made Ham radio parts as a part time out of college and while I don’t have a license, it just really intrigues me that these boys do and I really wonder if they ever check into the emergency net and do Ham contesting when they aren’t throwing cards around. Ham people are like...really into their rigs so if you had Kaiba money, your rig would reach the curvature of the Earth.
Also, I kinda just assumed that they’re still in Japan, since Japan has a lot of islands connected to it, and the Kaiba Island does look man-made, but...is it not? Why place this factory in the middle of nowhere if you aren’t actually building a merc-for-hire program like Metal Gear? Like I know we just talked about how Gozobura Kaiba was basically Big Boss, but like...was this island made by Master Miller? Why is it in the middle of the ocean???
Big Boss had a reason to build in the sea, because he didn’t actually align with a country, so he had to be in international waters, but Gozobura Kaiba’s company is Japanese, so why go through all the trouble of--whatever I shouldn’t think about it.
So yeah, they’re too far away to radio to Japan although...that doesn’t make sense to me since why would you build a manufacturing plant so far away from your biggest buyer? But plot. Plot reasons, it had to happen this way.
And then this scene happened and it was...SO MUCH.
THIS WAS SO MUCH.
THIS SCENE WAS JUST SO FREAKIN AWKWARD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like it may not come through with the caps but this scene was made up to be extremely serious. The music was swelling, Pharaoh was pausing by Joey’s bedside as if to give a speech. The writers were expecting tears to come out of my face when Pharaoh did..........this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wʜᴏ ᴡʀᴛᴇ ᴛʜɪs.
Tumblr media
Y’all I was DYING.
I had to stop the episode and just like...recover. We had to rewind so I could watch this scene twice. I could not stop laughing at the idea that the writers were like “lets take this very serious and heavy content and then make it super emotional and meaningful by SLAPPING A DUEL DISK ON IT.”
And what makes this scene even better is that like--barely anyone said ANYTHING after Pharaoh did this. He waltzed in there, did this insane thing, and then just waltzed out as if this was completely normal.
What the hell!?!?
And so while I am kind of reeling from Pharaoh just slapping a duel disk onto Joey like it’s a badge of honor and Joey was shot in the line of duty, suddenly--out of nowhere--Tea felt like reminding us that many episodes ago it was super hinted that these two might actually be approaching a relationship.
Tumblr media
And so Tea decides to beg Yugi to stop and stay behind as if she’s a wife watching her husband like march off to the front lines or something. It was so melodramatic and just came out of NO WHERE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, as is this show’s custom, every time it looks like this ship might happen, every other available boy on the show must appear out of nowhere to cockblock the situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode is a lot of watching Pharaoh try his best to navigate a bunch of very delicate and intense social situations and he does so with the elegance and sensitivity of a bologna sandwich.
Tumblr media
This shot of Kaiba on top of the tower ps was so freakin rediculous. This show just knows what it is and goes for it. Completely unashamed. I think that’s what I like most about anime--it has absolutely no shame to just be...waaaay too much.
...why THIS episode? Who was it that worked overtime for months and months just to make this one Yugioh episode look so shiny and nice?
Tumblr media
And so the episode ends there, and probably all the character development we’ll have for the rest of the season. I cannot believe they gave me that much content in one episode. Damn.
I’m assuming next episode will be entirely cards and I’ll have like 5 caps of content.
Anyway if you just got here, this is a handy link to read these from the beginning.
